MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team closes its 2018 regular-season slate with a five-team meet at Towson on Sunday, March 18, with action inside the SECU Arena set to begin at 2 p.m.
The Mountaineers (9-10, 0-3) will compete against the host Tigers (11-14, 0-8 EAGL) for the second time this season and the first time since January. The squad also will face NC State (15-7, 5-1 EAGL), Cornell (15-7, 4-3 ECAC) and William & Mary (3-11, 1-2 ECAC).
"In the beginning, we talked about how daunting this travel schedule could be, but I'm so proud of this team rising to the occasion wherever it competes," Mountaineer coach
Jason Butts said. "We have to keep that momentum going, and I definitely think we can get another big score this weekend.
"We are making a steady push toward postseason. There is no dip with this team, and my hope is we hit our peak in postseason."
The Mountaineers are 1-0 against the field this season, having defeated Towson, 195.4-194.0, on Jan. 21, at the WVU Coliseum. WVU is 23-11 all-time against the Tigers. In their last meeting in Towson, WVU dropped a 195.025-194.575 decision on Feb. 12, 2017.
Former foes in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL), WVU is 26-14 all-time against the Wolfpack. The teams last met in 2015, a 195.35-194.05 Mountaineer victory in Raleigh, North Carolina.
WVU is 5-0 against Cornell. In their last meeting, the Mountaineers earned a 196.075-191.3 win in their 2015 regular-season finale at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers are 17-0 all-time against the Tribe. The teams last met in 2016, a 195.8-190.075 WVU win in Morgantown.
For the first time this season, WVU will open the meet on floor. The Mountaineers' complete rotation order is floor-bye-vault-bars-beam.
"We need to be consistent. We need to hit those six floor routines and come out strong early," Butts added. "I think this team will be fine with the change. It's good for this group to experience a bye together."
WVU is coming off back-to-back 196.0+ performances on the road, including a season-high 196.425, second-place showing at No. 18 George Washington on March 11. The mark ranks No. 14 in program history and was the team's best road showing since 2012.
This year's squad is the fourth in program history and the first since 2004 to earn two 196.0+ marks on the road in one season. No Mountaineer team has earned three.
WVU has scored 196.0 or better in three of its last four meets.
Ranked No. 29 in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings with a 195.865 regional qualifying score (RQS), the Mountaineers continue to rank nationally on vault and check in at No. 13 with a 49.13 RQS. Junior
Kirah Koshinski ranks No. 12 on vault (9.9 RQS) and No. 44 on floor (9.885 RQS).
Included in the Mountaineers' showing at GW last week were two outright individual wins, as Koshinski claimed the floor title with a career-high matching 9.95 and sophomore
Chloe Cluchey, the reigning Big 12 Conference co-Event Specialist of the Week, won bars with a career-best 9.925. Koshinski also tied for first on vault with a 9.9. Additionally, junior
Jaquie Tun made her career beam debut and paced WVU with a second place, 9.875 showing.
