MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team claimed two wins in singles play, but fell to No. 50 Oklahoma, 4-2, on Friday, at the Headington Family Tennis Center, in Norman, Oklahoma.
WVU (4-6, 0-1) began the match by dropping the doubles point, as Oklahoma claimed two of three doubles matches. Paula Goetz and Lyn Yuen Choo claimed WVU's lone win in doubles play as they dropped Simran Kaur Sethi and Camila Romero, 6-2, at No. 1.
On the third court, Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo fell to Skyler Miller and Lily Miyazaki, 6-3. Then, the Sooners claimed the doubles point as WVU's Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran fell to Jasmine Ashgar and Christiana Brigante, 6-3, on the third court.
"We started doubles off well today," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "There were two instances where a few games slipped away from us and unfortunately went to Oklahoma's side"
The Mountaineers went on to drop three of the first four singles matches, allowing the Sooners to clinch the victory. On the first court, Jordan fell to No. 31-ranked Miyazaki, 6-2 in straight sets, to open singles play.
At the No. 6 slot, Caputo earned her team-leading sixth victory of the season when she topped Miller, 6-3 and 6-4.
After dropping a first-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), Courteau dropped the second set, 6-1, to OU's Asghar as the Sooners took the 3-1 lead.
Goetz picked up the second win of the day for WVU when she dropped Romero, 6-4 and 6-2, at No. 5, to cut the lead to 3-2. Sethi clinched the win for Oklahoma when she defeated Duran, 7-5 and 6-0.
The match between Lyn Yuen Choo and Christiana Brigante was abandoned in the second set due to clinch rules.
"In singles, we had great battles across all six matches," Lisac said. "We started the comeback on court three, but unfortunately we weren't able to turn any of the remaining matches in order to come up with the fourth point."
West Virginia closes the opening weekend of conference play on Sunday, as it takes on No. 19 Oklahoma State. First serve from Stillwater, Oklahoma, is slated for noon ET.
