March 15, 2018 12:31 PM | Tennis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team opens Big 12 conference play this weekend with a swing through the Sooner State, as the Mountaineers take on No. 50 Oklahoma on Friday, March 16, and No. 19 Oklahoma State on Sunday, March 18.
"Every team that we will play in the Big 12 will be a challenge," fifth-year head coach Miha Lisac said. "It's important that we continue the work that we've done so far this season. We have prepared a few good opportunities for ourselves. We haven't really taken full advantage of those yet, but I believe that continuing that approach, we will have more opportunities against Big 12 teams and we have to step up in those moments."
Friday's contest is slated to begin at 5 p.m. ET, and will take place at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, weather depending. Should inclement weather move the match indoors, the two teams will compete at the Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion. If the match is played indoors, fans are able to watch the match live here. Regardless of the location of the match, fans will be able to follow along using live stats at WVUlivestats.com.
OU enters the match with a 6-5 record on the season after defeating No. 40 North Carolina State, 4-3, on March 9, in Lake Nona, Florida. Senior Lily Miyazaki leads the Sooners in singles play with a 6-3 record at the No. 1 position, while coming in at No. 31 in the Oracle/ITA singles rankings on March 6. Senior Christiana Brigante and sophomore Jasmine Asghar pace Oklahoma in doubles action with a 4-2 record in the first slot.
On Sunday, WVU squares off with No. 19 Oklahoma State. First serve from Stillwater, Oklahoma, is set for noon ET. Sunday's contest will mark the third match of the week for the Cowgirls, who defeated No. 11 UCLA on Wednesday, and will face Iowa State on Friday.
OSU enters Big 12 play with a 9-1 record and features three ranked singles players and a ranked doubles team. The Cowgirls are led by Vladica Babic, who came in at No. 38 in the latest Oracle/ITA Rankings. Megan McCray (No. 74) and Marinna Guinart (No. 96) also are ranked in singles play. Babic and Sofia Blanco are the lone doubles team ranked for OSU, ranking No. 19.
WVU's Lyn Yuen Choo and Giovanna Caputo are tied for the team lead with five singles wins apiece this season. The doubles pair of Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran pace the team with five wins at the No. 1 doubles position.
Last weekend, the Mountaineers fell to border-rival Maryland in their lone match of the week. WVU started the match by dropping the doubles point, as the Terrapins claimed two of three doubles matches. Paula Goetz earned WVU's lone point of the day, after topping Anastasia Gevel, 7-5 and 6-2, on court No. 5. UM claimed wins in the final five singles matches.
