MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A conference- and program-best 10 West Virginia University gymnasts were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Gymnastics team today.
Of the 10 Mountaineers honored, four earned their awards with 4.0 grade point averages (GPA): juniors Carly Galpin and Jaquie Tun and sophomores Abby Kaufman and Julia Merwin. No other conference team had more than one 4.0 GPA.
"I'm really proud of this team's accomplishments, in and out of the gym," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "We stress academic success as part of our program's overall success, and I think that's on display today with these awards. The fact we have multiple 4.0 GPAs is another testament that this team takes academic achievement very seriously.
"We've seen an upward trend over the years with our team GPA, and I hope we keep climbing scholastically as we also continue climb with our gymnastics."
Eight Mountaineers were named to the first team. Seniors Robyn Bernard (exercise physiology) and Jordan Gillette (exercise physiology) earned their third career awards, while junior Kirah Koshinski (communications studies) and Galpin (elementary education) tallied their second career honors. Four Mountaineers were named to the team for the first time: sophomore Kassidy Cumber (exercise physiology) and Kaufman (exercise physiology), Merwin (sport & exercise psychology) and Tun (graphic design).
Senior Zaakira Muhammad (journalism) and sophomore Erica Fontaine (strategic communications) were named to the second team. The award is the third career for Muhammad.
In total, 33 gymnasts earned recognitions. Oklahoma matched WVU's 10 selections, while Iowa State earned eight and Denver had four.
