MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following the team's best road showing since 2012, the West Virginia University gymnastics team moved up four charts in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
The Mountaineers (9-10, 0-3) made the biggest jump on uneven bars, where the team moved up three spots to No. 39 with a 48.805 regional qualifying score (RQS). WVU also moved up two spots overall to No. 29 with a 195.865 RQS and one spot to No. 13 on vault (49.13 RQS) and No. 28 on floor (49.135 RQS). The Mountaineers continue to rank No. 30 nationally on balance beam (48.95 RQS).
Junior Kirah Koshinski continues to own two national rankings. The Berwick, Pennsylvania, native continues to rank No. 12 on vault with a 9.9 RQS. Additionally, she moved up five spots to No. 44 on floor with a 9.885 RQS.
WVU scored a season-best 196.425 in a second-place showing at No. 18 George Washington on March 11. The Mountaineers finished the day with season highs on bars (49.15) and beam (49.125).
This week's rankings are the third of the season based on RQS. An RQS is calculated by taking a squad and gymnast's six-best scores, three of which must be from a road meet, dropping the top score and averaging the remaining five.
Regionally, the Mountaineers rank as high as No. 3 in the Southeast on vault. WVU also ranks No. 5 on beam and No. 6 overall, on bars and on floor.
Four Mountaineers are regionally ranked on vault, paced by Koshinski, who sits at No. 4. Seniors Robyn Bernard and Zaakira Muhammad rank No. 12 (9.85 RQS) and No. 15 (9.845 RQS), respectively, and sophomore Julia Merwin ranks No. 21 (9.82 RQS).
Koshinski also ranks No. 9 on floor, and senior Jordan Gillette follows at No. 22 (9.835 RQS).
On bars, junior Jaquie Tun and Muhammad rank No. 21 (9.815 RQS) and No. 24 (9.8 RQS), respectively. Additionally, junior Carly Galpin ranks No. 21 on beam (9.82 RQS).
There is no change in the Mountaineers' Big 12 Conference rankings this week. WVU ranks No. 3 on vault and floor and No. 4 overall, on bars and on beam.
Koshinski ranks No. 4 on vault and No. 7 on floor. Bernard breaks into the conference's vault top-10 rankings and ranks No. 10.
