Box Score MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team claimed a win in one singles match, but fell to Maryland, 6-1, on Saturday, at the Junior Tennis Champions Center, in College Park, Maryland.
WVU (4-5) began the match by dropping the doubles point, as Maryland claimed two of three doubles matches. On the first court,
Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran fell to Millie Stretton and Eva Alexandrova, 6-2. Then, the Terrapins claimed the doubles point, as WVU's
Anne-Sophie Courteau and
Giovanna Caputo dropped the match on the third court, 6-1.
On the second court,
Paula Goetz and
Lyn Yuen Choo led Maryland's Ekaterina Tour and Kate Yemelyankenka, 3-2, before the match was abandoned due to clinch rules.
The Mountaineers would then drop three of the first four singles matches, as the Terrapins would clinch the victory with two matches still in play. At the No. 6 slot, Caputo fell to Zoe Kulkarni, 6-1 and 6-3, to give Maryland the 2-0 lead. Duran dropped the match at No. 4 in two sets, 6-3 and 6-4, to give Maryland a 3-0 edge.
Goetz earned WVU's first point of the day as she picked up a two-set victory, 7-5 and 6-2, on court No. 5. After falling in a hard fought first-set tiebreaker, Jordan could not hold on in the second set, falling to Alexandrova, 7-6 (4) and 7-5, at No. 1, to clinch the match for the Terrapins.
Courteau and Choo fell in third-set tiebreakers on courts No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, as Maryland claimed the 6-1 win.
"We had created good opportunities in singles today," fifth-year coach
Miha Lisac said. "We will get better in closing out in the future."
West Virginia will be back in action next weekend as it opens conference play with a swing through the Sooner State. The Mountaineers take on Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, on Friday, March 16, beginning at noon ET. WVU concludes its road trip on Sunday, March 18, at Oklahoma State. First serve for Sunday's match is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
