MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt senior Amy Cashin and redshirt junior Madelin Gardner of the West Virginia University track and field team have qualified for the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, as announced on Tuesday evening.
NCAA Release
Cashin qualified for the women's mile, while Gardner is set to compete in the women's pole vault. The two are the first Mountaineers to qualify for the national indoor meet since Kelly Williams in 2013.
The meet commences from March 9-10, in College Station, Texas.
"The pole vault and mile have traditionally been very strong events at West Virginia, and it's nice to see the team and University competing at this meet," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "The NCAA Championship truly is a world-class competition. These competitors will become future stars of the Olympic Games. For Maddie and Amy, this championship is another opportunity to be rewarded for all of the sacrifice and hard work they have displayed over the last few years."
Cashin enters the national meet ranked No.1 in the Big 12 and No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional in the women's mile. She also sits in the No. 10 overall position in the event's list of participants. The Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native earned an adjusted time of 4:36.89 (season best) at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Feb. 17.
Cashin is set to compete in the second national track and field meet of her collegiate career. Last year, she qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, placing 19th.
Gardner, a Williamstown, West Virginia, native, set the indoor school record in the women's pole vault on Feb. 3 at the Akron Invitational in Akron, Ohio, earning a mark of 4.37 meters (14 feet, 4 inches). The jump ranked No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Regional and No. 2 in the Big 12 during the 2017-18 indoor campaign. Gardner also enters the national meet with the eighth-best mark in the country this indoor season.
Texas A&M will again serve as the host to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Competition is set to begin at 1 p.m. ET on March 9, with the women's mile semifinal scheduled for 6:50 p.m. at Gilliam Indoor Stadium. The women's pole vault final takes place on March 10, at 5 p.m.
