MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team closed the 2018 Big 12 Indoor Championship with a pair of All-Big 12 performances at the Lied Recreation Athletic Facility, in Ames, Iowa, on Saturday.
Senior Shamoya McNeil finished third in the women's triple jump on the final day of the two-day championship meet, registering a season-best mark of 12.85 meters (42 feet, 2.5 inches). The Portland, Jamaica, native earned All-Big 12 First Team honors for the first time in her indoor collegiate career.
Later on, redshirt senior Amy Cashin took fifth in the women's 3,000 meters. Cashin crossed the finish line in 9:32.42 to make the all-conference team. The Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native also earned All-Big 12 recognition as a member of WVU's distance medley relay team on Friday.
In all, WVU finished the conference meet with six All-Big 12 honors in three different events.
"All in all, we had a very good winter with this team," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "We earned multiple school records and numerous additions to our top five lists. Our freshmen came out and set freshmen school records throughout January. While we were hoping to bring home a few more All-Big 12 performances, we are quite happy with those that did earn the honor over the weekend.
"For the majority of the team, we need to go home and get over this pesky flu bug. We need to get those that are not with us this weekend due to illness and injury to get back into the lineup, and most importantly, we need to ensure that we come out in the outdoor season ready to put as many kids onto the podium at the Big 12 meet and into the NCAA Championships as possible. We're now awaiting news as to who will qualify for the NCAA Indoor meet in two weeks. Our hunch is that we will have both Madelin Gardner and Amy lining up in the pole vault and mile."
Joining Cashin in the 3,000 meters was redshirt senior Maggie Drazba, who finished in ninth place in 9:32.42. Redshirt sophomore Olivia Hill was 19th in 9:53.68, while redshirt freshman Sarah Wills and freshman Marianne Abdalah also competed in the event.
Saturday's events also included the women's high jump, where redshirt freshman Kyrielle Williams finished in 11th place with a mark of 1.66 meters (5 feet, 5.25 inches).
The Mountaineers earned a fourth-place finish in the women's distance medley relay on Friday, as the team of Wills, freshman McKenna Smith, redshirt sophomore Candace Jones and Cashin crossed the finish line in 11:28.20.
WVU will now await the announcement of the Division I Indoor Track and Field Championship qualifiers, which is set to be released on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The national meet commences from March 9-10 in College Station, Texas.
