Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team picked up one win in singles and doubles play as it fell to East Tennessee State, 6-1, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Akron, Ohio, on Saturday.
"Unfortunately, today we didn't find enough to sustain the match from yesterday," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "We had a solid performance at No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles today."
WVU stumbled out of the gate, losing two of three doubles matches. West Virginia's lone win in doubles play came when Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran dropped Alory Pereira and Ioanna Markesini, 6-2, on the first court. However, the Bucs would rally as Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz fell, 6-3, on the second court and Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo were defeated on the third court.
In singles play, Caputo topped Yi Chi Ma in two sets, 6-4 and 6-4, at No. 4 to give WVU its only point of the day. At No. 1, ETSU's Markesini defeated Christina Jordan, 6-1 and 6-2. Courteau won the first set over Pereira, 6-1, but dropped the last two sets 6-1 and 6-3, to fall on the second court. After dropping the first set, Choo rallied to force a third set, but fell in the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8, on the third court. The Bucs would win the matches as Abigail Rosiello fell 6-1 and 6-1, at No. 5 and Kirsten White lost 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 6.
Up next, the Mountaineers will return to Morgantown for a pair of matches at the Summit Tennis Academy. WVU will face Buffalo on Feb. 24, at noon, and Towson on Feb. 25, beginning at 1 p.m.
