Morgantown, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women's tennis team swept doubles play and won four of six matches in singles to drop Akron, 5-2, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Akron, Ohio on Friday.
"Today was a good team win," fifth-year coach Miha Lisac said. "It took players at all positions in singles and doubles to get to the finish line. We showed good fight all around."
WVU opened the contest by winning all three matches in doubles play. At No. 1, sophomores Christina Jordan and Sofía Duran bested Akron's Carli Knezevich and Miruna Vasilescu, 6-2. Lyn Yuen Choo and Paula Goetz earned the win at No. 2, with a 7-6 victory over Rita Pedroso and Anna Uljanov. The Mountaineers completed the sweep as the freshmen tandem of Anne-Sophie Courteau and Giovanna Caputo topped Luisa Echeverry and Waverly Wituski, 7-5.
The Mountaineers carried their momentum into singles play, winning four of the six singles matches. After falling 4-6 in the first set, Jordan won the next two sets over Pedroso, 6-3 and 6-2, on the first court. At No. 3, Choo picked up her team-leading third singles win of the year over Knezevich, 6-0 and 6-3. Duran (6-4, 6-2) and Caputo (6-3, 6-4) each earned two-set victories at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.
Courteau fell to Akron's Vasilescu in two sets, 6-0 and 7-5, at No. 2 as Vasilescu remained unblemished on the season. On the fourth court, Goetz was injured in the second set and unable to finish the match, resulting in an Akron victory.
Up next, the Mountaineers will stay in the Rubber City for a neutral site matchup against East Tennessee State on Saturday, Feb. 17, at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Akron, Ohio. First serve is slated for 10 a.m.
"Tomorrow is the second match of our trip and we are staying focused on the match ahead of us." Lisac noted.
