Six Mountaineers Earn Big 12 Academic Honors

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –Six members of the West Virginia women's basketball team were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team, as announced by the league on Thursday.
Redshirt junior center Theresa Ekhelar, senior forward Kristina King, junior guard Katrina Pardee and redshirt freshman guard Nia Staples were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Redshirt freshman forward Krystaline McCune and senior guard Chania Ray earned mention on the Academic All-Big 12 Second Team.
Ekhelar, a sport management major, earns her first Big 12 honor after transferring to WVU from Ohio State last season. Mebane, North Carolina, native King is a multidisciplinary studies major who was previously named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll. Pardee earns first team honors for the second straight season. Hailing from Cedar Park, Texas, she is pursuing a degree in exercise physiology. Staples, who is majoring in sport and exercise psychology, earned her first Big 12 honor after missing last season due to injury.
Like Staples, McCune picks up her first Big 12 honor after missing last season due to injury. She is currently enrolled in the undergraduate studies program. Ray, a native of Alexandria, Virginia, completed her bachelor's degree in criminology in December. A 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Second Team honoree, she is pursuing a master's degree in communications.
Fifty student-athletes were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Women's Basketball Team. Thirty-four selections make up the first team with 16 honorees on the second team.
First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests.
Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
