Gordon Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After leading the No. 14-ranked women's soccer team to the 2018 Big 12 Soccer Championship, senior forward Sh'Nia Gordon has been named the West Virginia University Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Gordon finished with a team-best five points (2 G, 1 A) at the championship, including the game-winning goals in the quarterfinal and semifinal wins. She also assisted on the team's second insurance goal in a 3-0 win over No. 9 Baylor in the championship final on Nov. 4, at Swope Soccer Village, in Kansas City, Missouri.
For her efforts all week, Gordon was named the Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Offensive Player. She also was named to the All-Tournament Team and All-Big 12 First Team.
This Week in Women's Soccer: The No. 14-ranked Mountaineers (14-4-3, 7-2) will learn their fate for the 2018 NCAA Tournament this afternoon, as the NCAA Selection Show streams at 4:30 p.m. EST on NCAA.com.

Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia unofficially opened the season with an exhibition against West Liberty as part of Haunted Hoops … the Mountaineers downed the Lady Hilltoppers, 88-53, on Tuesday … senior guard/forward Naomi Davenport led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds … redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin had 15 points, while sophomore guard Kysre Gondrezick and senior center Theresa Ekhelar each had 12 … WVU shot 58.1 percent from the field as a team and had 54 points in the paint in the win.
Notes: Martin returned to game action for the first time since March of 2017, as she sat out the 2017-18 season with an injury … Gondrezick made her career debut with the Mountaineers after sitting out last season due to NCAA transfer rules … a trio of freshman saw their first collegiate action against West Liberty in forward Kari Niblack, guard Madisen Smith and forward Jala Jordan … Niblack had nine points, two steals and a team-best two blocks in 22 minutes of action … Smith also had nine points in 22 minutes, adding five assists … Jordan saw six minutes of action and made a pair of field goals.
This Week in Wrestling: West Virginia (1-0) will head to its final open tournament of the season, traveling to Troy, New York, for the 2018 Journeymen Collegiate Classic on Sunday, Nov. 11 ... it will mark the first time since 2016 that WVU will compete at the event.
Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia topped Big 12 foe Northern Colorado, 22-14, in its 2018-19 season opener, on Thursday, at the WVU Coliseum ... WVU won six of 10 bouts against UNC, including a win by fall at 285 pounds … West Virginia then sent 16 wrestlers to compete in the 2018 Hokie Open on Sunday, at Berglund Arena, in Roanoke, Virginia, wrapping up the one-day event with 10 top-five finishes … redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt went 5-0 in his pool to claim his first tournament win of his career at 133 pounds … redshirt junior Zachary Moore (157) and sophomore Nick Kiussis (165) also earned third-place finishes in their respective weight classes in the open division, while redshirt junior David Smith placed fifth in the heavyweight bracket ... in the freshman/sophomore division, WVU placed six Mountaineers on the podium, as redshirt freshman Noah Adams went 4-0 to capture the 197-pound title ... redshirt freshman KJ Fenstermacher (125) and freshman Josh Ramirez (174) also collected third-place finishes in their respective weight classes, while sophomore Hunter DeLong placed fourth at 184 pounds ... additionally, redshirt freshmen Joey Thomas and Sean Mullican each claimed a fifth-place finish in the 125-pound and 285-pound pool, respectively.

Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia dropped a pair of Big 12 matches last week, suffering a 3-1 loss to Kansas at home on Wednesday and falling in three sets at Kansas State on Saturday … West Virginia finished the week hitting .192 with 90 kills and six total blocks … five Mountaineers tallied double-digit kills on the week, as junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans led the team with 24, averaging 3.43 kills per set … freshman setter Lacey Zerwas also dished out 70 assists to average 10.00 per set last week, while sophomore defensive specialist Alexa Hasting had a team-high 18 digs to average 2.57 per set … additionally, sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo led WVU's blocking efforts with four, averaging 0.57 per set last week.

Last Week in Tennis: West Virginia traveled to Louisville, Kentucky, to compete in the Louisville Tennis Classic, at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, from Nov. 2-3 … junior Sofia Duran made her 2018 debut over the weekend, claiming two singles wins and four doubles wins alongside senior Abigail Rosiello … Duran and Rosiello led the team in doubles victories (4) … Duran, sophomore Anne-Sophie Courteau and sophomore Giovanna Caputo all tied for the team lead in singles wins with two.

This Week in Rowing: West Virginia will host Duquesne in Morgantown, West Virginia, on the Monongahela River for a team scrimmage on Friday, Nov. 9 … both WVU's varsity and novice squad will compete in Friday's fall finale.
Last Week in Rowing: WVU rowing's novice squad traveled to Fairfax Station, Virginia, to compete in the 34th annual Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Nov. 3 … this year's competition took place on the Occoquan Reservoir … the Mountaineers secured two top-three finishes in the novice women's 4+ race … WVU's 'A' boat finished the race in 21:26.82 for second place, while the 'B' boat posted a time of 21:31.12 to finish in third … in the novice women's 8+ race, West Virginia's 'A' boat posted a time of 20:13.70 to finish in fifth … it marked the first intercollegiate competition for 22 student-athletes, who were named to the novice squad on Sept. 13.

Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia unofficially opened the season with an exhibition against West Liberty as part of Haunted Hoops … the Mountaineers downed the Lady Hilltoppers, 88-53, on Tuesday … senior guard/forward Naomi Davenport led the way with 18 points and eight rebounds … redshirt junior guard Tynice Martin had 15 points, while sophomore guard Kysre Gondrezick and senior center Theresa Ekhelar each had 12 … WVU shot 58.1 percent from the field as a team and had 54 points in the paint in the win.

Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia topped Big 12 foe Northern Colorado, 22-14, in its 2018-19 season opener, on Thursday, at the WVU Coliseum ... WVU won six of 10 bouts against UNC, including a win by fall at 285 pounds … West Virginia then sent 16 wrestlers to compete in the 2018 Hokie Open on Sunday, at Berglund Arena, in Roanoke, Virginia, wrapping up the one-day event with 10 top-five finishes … redshirt sophomore Matthew Schmitt went 5-0 in his pool to claim his first tournament win of his career at 133 pounds … redshirt junior Zachary Moore (157) and sophomore Nick Kiussis (165) also earned third-place finishes in their respective weight classes in the open division, while redshirt junior David Smith placed fifth in the heavyweight bracket ... in the freshman/sophomore division, WVU placed six Mountaineers on the podium, as redshirt freshman Noah Adams went 4-0 to capture the 197-pound title ... redshirt freshman KJ Fenstermacher (125) and freshman Josh Ramirez (174) also collected third-place finishes in their respective weight classes, while sophomore Hunter DeLong placed fourth at 184 pounds ... additionally, redshirt freshmen Joey Thomas and Sean Mullican each claimed a fifth-place finish in the 125-pound and 285-pound pool, respectively.

Last Week in Rowing: WVU rowing's novice squad traveled to Fairfax Station, Virginia, to compete in the 34th annual Head of the Occoquan on Saturday, Nov. 3 … this year's competition took place on the Occoquan Reservoir … the Mountaineers secured two top-three finishes in the novice women's 4+ race … WVU's 'A' boat finished the race in 21:26.82 for second place, while the 'B' boat posted a time of 21:31.12 to finish in third … in the novice women's 8+ race, West Virginia's 'A' boat posted a time of 20:13.70 to finish in fifth … it marked the first intercollegiate competition for 22 student-athletes, who were named to the novice squad on Sept. 13.
