MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following her performance at Junkanoo Jam last week, West Virginia University women's basketball guard Madisen Smith has been named the Big 12 Co-Freshman of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Smith is the first Mountaineer rookie to earn the honor since Tynice Martin did so twice in January of 2016. She shares the accolade with Audrey Warren of Texas.
The Greenville, South Carolina, native became just the second true freshman since March of 2016 to score in double figures for the Mountaineers when she dropped a career-high 13 points against No. 12 Iowa on Thursday. She went 5-for-6 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 on 3-pointers against the Hawkeyes.
Smith hit double digits in Saturday's win over Eastern Kentucky as well, coming off the bench for 11 points and five rebounds. She ranked fourth on the team last week with 12.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. She finished the week shooting 75.0 percent from the field and went 6-of-7 from beyond the arc.
West Virginia is back in action on Sunday when the Mountaineers host Missouri in a 5 p.m. tip at the WVU Coliseum as part of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
