
WVU Completes Navy Diving Invite on Platform

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's and women's divers concluded the Navy Diving Invitational on platform on Saturday in Annapolis, Maryland.
Competing on platform to close out the three-day event, freshman Nick Cover led the Mountaineer men with a fourth-place finish and senior Julia Calcut finished in fifth place to pace the WVU women.
Cover was fourth with a score of 303.15. Freshman PJ Lenz finished in sixth with a 226.20, redshirt freshman Jacob Cardinal Tremblay earned a score of 218.90 to place seventh, and sophomore Caleb Keck placed eighth with a score of 200.25.
Calcut led the West Virginia women to place fifth. She earned a score of 201.85, followed by freshman Emma Longley's 182.65 to finish sixth. In seventh was sophomore Callie Smith (170.6), and freshman Camille Burt (154.15) came in eighth.
On Saturday, WVU's women competed against Navy and Virginia, while the men dove against Navy, Penn State and Virginia. The meet, which included George Washington, St. Bonaventure and UMass on the first two days of competition, began on Thursday with men's 1-meter and women's 3-meter. Friday's action saw the women on 1-meter and the men on 3-meter. Both 1- and 3-meter competitions featured prelims and finals, while Saturday's platform event was just finals.
Senior Averly Hobbs advanced to the finals on 3-meter and earned a fifth-place finish to lead WVU on Thursday. The following day, she was joined in the finals on 1-meter by Calcut and Longley. Hobbs placed third, Longley was seventh and Calcut eighth.
West Virginia will return to Annapolis and Lejeune Hall for the 2019 NCAA Zone A Diving Championships, from March 11-13.
Up next for the Mountaineer divers is a Backyard Brawl matchup against Pitt on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 11 a.m. ET, in Pittsburgh.
