DeMeo Garners Academic Award
November 15, 2018 05:14 PM | Volleyball
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo of the West Virginia University volleyball team was named to the 2018 Academic All-District 2 Volleyball Team today, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The honor is her first career district award. A native of Troy, Ohio, DeMeo advances to the CoSIDA Academic All-America National ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honors will be selected in the coming weeks. She is the first Mountaineer to earn the award since Hannah Shreve received the honor in 2016.
A second-year starter, DeMeo has developed into one of the league's premier blockers. She currently ranks third in the Big 12 Conference in blocks per set, totaling 111 blocks on the season to average 1.32 per set. The Troy, Ohio, native also ranks 27th among all NCAA Division I players in blocks per set.
DeMeo is on pace to etch her name in the WVU single-season record book. Her average of 1.32 blocks per set would rank No. 3 all-time by a Mountaineer sophomore and rank ninth overall in a single season in program history. Additionally, she boasts 111 total blocks on the year, 13 shy of moving into the top-four all-time by a sophomore.
DeMeo, who was one of eight Mountaineers to land on the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, shows a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 in business. A member of the 2017 All-Big 12 Rookie Team, she also is a President's List honoree and a member of the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, as well as the Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
West Virginia caps its regular-season home slate with a Big 12 match against Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. It is Mountaineer Kids Club Day, and fans will have an opportunity to receive the Mountaineers' autographs one last time following the match.
