Fall Classic Thursday, Open to Fans
November 14, 2018 04:55 PM | Gymnastics
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will hold its annual Fall Classic Intrasquad on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 3 p.m., inside Cary Gym.
Fans are encouraged to attend the intrasquad for their first look at the 2019 Mountaineers. Admission is free.
Lineups will be posted at WVUsports.com early Thursday morning, and a complete recap will be provided Friday.
The Fall Classic will simulate a formal meet, as the Mountaineers will split into two teams and the gymnasts will compete full routines in front of judges and fans.
"Every preseason evolves differently. We haven't listed top-eights at all this year," Mountaineer coach Jason Butts said. "I'm looking forward to this meet – I think it's going to be a wake-up call. Our depth on balance beam is insane, as is floor. Vault will come around, and bars is weak right now. I'm looking forward to seeing who's going to step up and compete. I think we will see our lineups start to take shape on Thursday."
"We are pushing really hard, and our expectation is execution," associate head coach Travis Doak said. "I am expecting hit routines and 9.8 scores. We're pushing for detail, and we want to eliminate wobbles. When we walk out of the intrasquad, we want to know if this team fine-tuned its routines or not. We want to see results, and we want to see routines that make a statement."
Butts returns for his eighth season with a Mountaineer squad that finished the 2018 season at 13-13 and qualified for its 35th NCAA Regional Championships. Joining Butts are Doak, entering his 11th season with the Mountaineers, and assistant coach Kaylyn Millick, who returns to the program following a one-year absence.
Eleven Mountaineers return for WVU this season, including three-time senior All-American Kirah Koshinski, who is joined by classmates Carly Galpin and Jaquie Tun. Five juniors return in Chloe Cluchey, Kassidy Cumber, Erica Fontaine, Abby Kaufman and Julia Merwin. Additionally, three sophomores are back for their second season: McKenna Linnen, Sydney Marler and Michelle Waldron.
Six freshmen look to make their Fall Classic debut on Thursday: Esperanza Abarca, Mackenzie Black, Kendra Combs, Rachel Hornung, Kristin Lang and Taylor Sell.
