MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Eight members of the West Virginia University volleyball team were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team, the league office announced on Tuesday.
The eight honors are a team record and top the previous season-best showing of six, set in 2013, 2016 and 2017. All eight members landed on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team, also a program-best showing.
Of WVU's eight honorees, sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo (business) earned the recognition with a 4.00 grade point average (GPA). The Troy, Ohio, native was one of eight from the conference to boast a 4.00 GPA, as she was named to the first team for the first time in her career. As a freshman, she landed on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team list.
Additionally, sophomores Alexa Hasting (design studies), Briana Lynch (biology), Lindsay Proctor (accounting) and Ava Richards (chemical engineering) each earned their first career honors, as they landed on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team a year ago.
Juniors Gabrielle Cuckovich (marketing) and Erin Slinde (journalism) earned their second first-team honors, while Natania Levak (world language, literature and linguistics) landed on the first team for the first time in her career.
A total of 66 student-athletes were named to the 2018 Academic All-Big 12 Volleyball Team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher, while the second team selections hold a 3.00-3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher, either cumulative or the two previous semesters, and must have participated in 20 percent of their team's scheduled contests.
