MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Max Sear and sophomore Matthew Sharpstene are in the top 10 of the 75-player field after two rounds of play at The Tavistock Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Florida, on Monday.
Sear and Sharpstene sit tied for fourth and seventh, respectively. West Virginia is tied with No. 12 Texas for fifth place overall. Both teams shot 288-288=576 to finish even par after 36 holes at Isleworth Golf & Country Club. No. 13 Vanderbilt holds the team lead at 18 under with a two-round score of 558. Texas Tech has moved into second at 10 under par (566), while No. 22 Auburn is third at five under (571).
Though unable to maintain his bogey-free streak from Sunday, Sear managed to use a pair of birdies and an eagle to finish one-over-par with a 73. His two-day, five-under-par total of 66-73=139 is five strokes back from leader No. 73 Will Gordon of Vanderbilt, who is 10 under.
After finishing even-par on Sunday, Sharpstene carded four birdies and an eagle on his way to a 69 for three-under-par. He finished the day at 72-69=141 and is tied for seventh place at three under.
Junior Etienne Papineau registered two birdies on the front nine, but struggled with a trio of bogeys on the back nine to finish one over in the second round. His two-round score of 71-73=144 puts him tied for 17th place at even par.
Sophomore Logan Perkins bounced back from his first-round struggles to shoot one-over-par with a pair of birdies in the second round. Perkins moved up nine spots in the standings to tie for 66th place with one round remaining. His two-round score of 82-73=155 puts him at 11 over. Junior Philipp Matlari is in 74th place after shooting 79-79=158. He is 14 over.
"The guys really closed out this round strong," coach Sean Covich said. "All the counting scores shot even or better their final nine holes. It was great to see Logan step up and give us a big round after struggling on day one. This sport is a team effort and you have to be able to put the bad rounds behind you quickly and bounce back. Logan certainly did that for us. Max, Matt and Etienne keep playing strong for us and they stepped up big on that closing nine. It will be a big day for us tomorrow/ We need to stick to our game plan, stay patient and fight until the end."
The Mountaineers are paired with No. 12 Texas and No. 18 Arizona State for the third and final round on Tuesday. Matlari will lead the squad with an 8:50 a.m. tee time off hole No. 1.
After one round at the Muskateers Classic in Cincinnati, sophomore Mark Goetz and senior Tristan Nicholls are tied for 24th at three over par with a 74. Freshman Kurtis Grant is tied for 73rd after shooting nine over par with an 80. They continue with the second round Monday evening resume play on Tuesday.
