MORGANTOWN, W.Va. –
The West Virginia University volleyball team welcomes No. 24 Baylor to the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Oct. 13, for its annual Pink Match.
First serve is set for 1 p.m. ET, with the team sporting pink jerseys in support of breast cancer awareness. WVU Medicine will sponsor the match and will collect donations for the WVU Cancer Institute. Fans are encouraged to wear pink and can get the WVU sports official "pink" t-shirt with a donation of $10 or more to WVU Medicine.
"It's important," fourth-year coach
Reed Sunahara said. "People have passed away because of the disease. My mom had it and a really good friend had it. It's meaningful. We want to find a cure. Hopefully, we can continue what we are doing, and the cancer society can find a cure and make everything go away."
It also is Dollar Day, and all tickets and select concessions will be available for $1 each. Following Saturday's match, the Mountaineers will put on a free youth clinic open to any and all entrants in eighth grade and below. Autographs also will take place following the match.
Fans can purchase tickets by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. All tickets are general admission.
When purchasing online, tickets are $5 each and $3 for groups of 10 or more. At the WVU Coliseum ticket window, tickets will be $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $3 for groups. The discounted online pricing will be available until first serve on game day. Fans are encouraged to order tickets in advance online at WVUGAME.com to avoid lines at the gate.
Tickets for WVU students are free with a valid student I.D.
"It's always good to play in front of our fans," Sunahara said. "We have the best. They come out and support us, and we look forward to playing here on Saturday in front of Mountaineer Nation."
West Virginia and Baylor meet for the 16th time overall on Saturday and the 13th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. BU owns a 12-3 all-time series advantage, with the Lady Bears picking up a 3-1 win in their most recent meeting on Nov. 19, 2017, in Morgantown. Of note, West Virginia recorded three straight wins from 2013-14, including a season sweep over Baylor in 2014. The last time the Mountaineers outlasted the Lady Bears was on Nov. 22, 2014.
West Virginia took a break from nonconference play Tuesday evening, ending a two-match losing streak with a 3-0 sweep over George Washington, at the Charles E. Smith Center, in Washington, D.C. The Mountaineers hit a season-high .306 with 36 kills and 10 team blocks in the win.
"We are working on different things that we need to work on," Sunahara said. "We are working on getting better at our craft. Tuesday night was good for us to play George Washington. We came out with a victory, and hopefully, we are back on track. That Kansas match was tough, but we have to rebound and get better."
Sophomore middle blocker
Katie DeMeo has developed into one of the league's premier blockers. She currently leads the Big 12 Conference in blocks per set, with 1.53, totaling 89 blocks on the season. The Troy, Ohio, native also ranks eighth among all NCAA Division I players in blocks per set. The Mountaineers rank third in the Big 12, averaging 2.58 blocks per set, and are 31st in the nation. WVU is outblocking its opponents, 170.0-132.5.
Offensively, Evans has played in all but one set for the Mountaineers this season. She leads the team with 204 kills, averaging 3.14 per set to rank 10th in the Big 12. The Palmdale, California, native has recorded double-digit kills in 11 matches, including seven of the last nine.
Baylor is coming off a 3-1 home win over TCU on Wednesday, as the squad hits the road for the first time since its four-set loss at Kansas a week ago. Of note, the Lady Bears look to avoid a three-match Big 12 road losing streak for the first time since the 2014 season. Yossiana Pressley, the reigning Big 12 Freshman of the Year, paces the Baylor offense, averaging a league-leading 5.13 kills per set and 5.57 points per set as an outside hitter. In 2018, Pressley has posted eight 20-plus kill matches and two 30-plus kill matches.
Of note, the Mountaineers are three wins away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 697-732 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, The Mountaineers will embark on their first five-day Big 12 road trip of the season, as they take on TCU on Thursday, Oct. 18 and Oklahoma on Saturday, Oct. 20. First serve for Thursday's match vs. the Horned Frogs is set for 8 p.m. ET, while Saturday's match against the Sooners starts at 2:30 p.m. ET.
