
Mountaineers Rank No. 16

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team debuts at No. 16 in the first Road to Nationals Rankings of the 2018 season.
The Mountaineers' (0-1) position is their highest regular-season ranking since sitting at No. 16 in the GymInfo Poll on Feb. 25, 2013.
WVU's ranking is based on the 194.425 mark the team earned in its 2018 season opener against then-No. 2 Florida (195.9) on January 5.
The Mountaineers also are nationally ranked No. 13 on uneven bars (48.75), No. 19 on balance beam (48.675) and No. 25 on floor exercise (48.575). The squad stands just outside the top 25 on vault and checks in at No. 27 (48.425).
WVU sits at No. 2 in the Southeast Region. The Mountaineers also rank No. 2 on bars, No. 4 on beam and floor and No. 5 on vault.
In the Big 12 Conference, WVU ranks No. 1 on bars. The team ranks No. 3 overall and No. 3 on vault, beam and floor.
Individually, junior Kirah Koshinski owns the team's top national ranking, as she sits at No. 14 on vault (9.85).
Senior Jordan Gillette ranks No. 25 nationally on floor (9.85), and classmate Zaakira Muhammad ranks No. 32 in the all-around (38.85) and No. 47 on bars (9.8).
Regionally, all six gymnasts who competed Friday night are ranked on beam. Gillette and Muhammad pace the team and sit at No. 11 (9.75). A trio of Mountaineers – junior Carly Galpin, sophomore Abby Kaufman and freshman McKenna Linnen - rank No. 18 (9.725), while Koshinski ranks No. 21 (9.7).
Five Mountaineers are ranked on bars, with Muhammad sitting at a team-high No. 6. Junior Jaquie Tun follows at No. 7 (9.775), while freshman Sydney Marler ranks No. 13 (9.75) and senior Robyn Bernard ranks No. 17 (9.725). Gillette checks-in at No. 21 (9.7).
Koshinski ranks second in the region on vault and is followed by Muhammad at No. 12 (9.775). Bernard and sophomore Julia Merwin rank No. 22 (9.675).
Gillette also ranks No. 2 on floor. Koshinski follows at No. 9 (9.8), and sophomore Erica Fontaine ranks No. 25 (9.7).
Muhammad checks-in at No. 9 in the all-around.
In the Big 12 Conference, Muhammad and Gillette rank No. 3 on bars and floor, respectively. Tun follows Muhammad in the bars rankings at No. 4, while Marler checks-in at No. 6 and Bernard sits at No. 8.
Koshinski ranks No. 4 on vault and follows Gillette in the floor rankings at No. 6.

LSU ranks No. 1 nationally after scoring 197.15 in its 2018 opener. Utah follows at No. 2 (197.0), while Central Michigan ranks No. 3 (196.375). UCLA (196.25) and Michigan (196.2) rank No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
Kentucky ranks No. 6 (196.075), Florida follows at No. 7 (195.9) and Denver ranks No. 8 (195.775). Alabama (195.675) and Arizona (195.425) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers continue their 2018 season-opening homestand on Sunday, Jan. 14, against No. 14 Arizona State, with action inside the WVU Coliseum set to begin at 1 p.m. It's Princess and Superhero Day, and free admission will be awarded to all fans in costume. It's also Mountaineer Kids Club Day, and the first 250 youths in attendance will receive a free WVU cape. Tickets for Sunday's meet are available at WVUGAME.com.
