MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Following a week in which he helped the Mountaineers' take down two ranked opponents inside the WVU Coliseum, West Virginia University redshirt junior Zeke Moisey has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.

Moisey set the tone in Thursday's win over No. 18 Oklahoma, winning by fall over No. 17 Christian Moody in 1 minute, 11 seconds at 125 pounds. Moisey, who is ranked 19th nationally, avenged a loss to Moody at the Lindenwood Open on Nov. 18.

Three days later, the Northampton, Pennsylvania, native claimed an 11-2 major decision over North Dakota State's Paul Bianchi. Moisey notched four takedowns in seven minutes to post his fourth straight dual-match win of the season and his 15th victory overall. The 125-pound wrestler claimed an early 4-1 advantage over Bianchi, collecting two takedowns in the first period. He then started the second frame in the defensive position and earned the escape before using another takedown to take a 7-1 lead into the final period. Bianchi notched an escape in the third, but Moisey was able to tack on another takedown to go along with a penalty point for the 10-2 advantage. The riding time also was in favor of Moisey, as he walked away with the 11-2 victory over Bianchi. His bonus-point victory set up a thrilling win, as the Mountaineers went on to claim five of nine bouts to defeat the Bison for their third Big 12 victory in program history.

Of note, Moisey leads the team with four pins and 16 takedowns on the year.

This Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers will play both home and away … on Wednesday, WVU travels to Lawrence, Kansas, to face the Kansas Jayhawks … tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on ESPN3 … the team returns home on Saturday to host TCU in a 5 p.m. tilt … the contest will air on AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh.

Last Week in Women's Basketball: West Virginia returned to the WVU Coliseum to open Big 12 home play … the Mountaineers dropped a 60-52 contest to Kansas State on Wednesday … senior forward Teana Muldrow notched a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds in the loss … junior guard Katrina Pardee had nine rebounds and three steals … on Sunday, WVU earned a hard-fought, 57-49 victory over Iowa State … junior guard Naomi Davenport had a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds in the win … Muldrow just missed a double-double with 14 rebounds and nine points … senior guard Chania Ray finished with 13 points and a pair of steals.

Notes: WVU came in at No. 12 in the AP Top 25 and ranked at No. 11 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll last week … the Mountaineers moved to 14-2 overall and 2-2 in Big 12 play … senior forward Teana Muldrow registered her eighth double-double of the season and the 18th of her career against KSU … she is tied for eighth place all-time in career double-doubles … junior guard Naomi Davenport registered her fourth double-double of the season against Iowa State … junior guard Katrina Pardee grabbed a career-high nine rebounds in the loss vs. Kansas State … WVU tied a program record by allowing Iowa State to score just four points in the second quarter … senior forward Kristina King returned to the lineup for the first time since Dec. 16 against ISU … WVU shot 29.3 percent from the field as a team against the Cyclones, the lowest output in a victory since shooting 26.5 percent on Jan. 12, 2014 vs. Texas.

Coach Mike Carey following Sunday's win over Iowa State: "We're just way out of sync," Carey said. "It's good to see (senior forward) Kristina King in there some. It's good to see (junior guard) Naomi (Davenport) start scoring a little bit, so we'll just keep fighting, keep trying to get better."

This Week in Gymnastics: The No. 16-ranked Mountaineers (0-1) continue their season-opening homestand against No. 14 Arizona State on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum … it's Princess and Superhero Day, and free admission will be awarded to all fans in costume … it's also Mountaineer Kids Club Day, and the first 250 youths in attendance will receive a free WVU cape … tickets for Sunday's meet are available at WVUGAME.com.

Last Season in Gymnastics: WVU opened the 2018 season with a 195.9-194.425 loss to No. 2-ranked Florida on Friday, Jan. 5, at the WVU Coliseum … the Mountaineers hit 24-for-24 routines and earned a 48.575-48.45 edge over the Gators on floor … UF took the vault (48.95-48.425), even bars (49.225-48.75) and balance beam (49.275-48.675) victories … senior Jordan Gillette paced the team on floor and finished second overall with a 9.85 … junior Kirah Koshinski scored a team-best 9.85 on vault and tied for second place … senior Zaakira Muhammad paced the team on bars and finished fourth with a 9.8 .. she also tied Gillette for fifth place on beam with a 9.75 and placed third in the all-around with a 38.85 total.

Notes: WVU's all-time record against UF is 2-14 … Gillette's floor score topped her 2017 season high of 9.825 … three gymnasts made their career debuts Friday: sophomore Erica Fontaine and freshmen McKenna Linnen and Sydney Marler … Sunday is the fourth-ever meeting between the Mountaineers and Arizona State … in the last meeting in 2002, WVU scored a 194.75-194.6 victory in Lincoln, Nebraska.

This Week in Track and Field: WVU is set to host the WVU Open on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 9 a.m. ET, at the WVU Shell Building.

Notes: Saturday marks WVU's first competition since Dec. 2 ... it's also the second and final home meet of the indoor season ... the event is open to the public, with admission and parking free of charge ... the Mountaineers earned three victories at last year's WVU Open, including wins by junior Faith Penny in the high jump, sophomore Candace Jones in the 500-meter run and the 4x400-meter relay ... WVU won eight events during the season-opening Marty Pushkin Classic on Dec. 2, including three by unattached runners ... the highlight of the day was junior Madelin Gardner's record-breaking performance in the pole vault, earning a new indoor school record mark of 4.15 meters.

This Week in Wrestling: West Virginia (3-3, 2-1 Big 12) does not compete this week … the Mountaineers will embark on their first Big 12 road trip of the season, as they take on No. 3 Oklahoma State on Friday, Jan. 19, followed by a match at Iowa State on Sunday, Jan. 21.

Last Week in Wrestling: West Virginia started 2018 with a perfect 2-0 record in Big 12 play, notching two upset wins over ranked opponents last week … the Mountaineers upset No. 18 Oklahoma in a thrilling 24-12 contest on Thursday evening at the WVU Coliseum … WVU then took down No. 25 North Dakota State in a 19-12 contest on Sunday evening … the Mountaineers won seven of 10 bouts to defeat the Sooners for the first time in Big 12 action … the last time West Virginia topped Oklahoma was in 1986 at a neutral site, which was when the two squads first met in the all-time series … WVU and NDSU went head-to-head for the first time in program history, as the Mountaineers collected six of 10 victories to earn a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series over the Bison … Redshirt junior Zeke Moisey (125), redshirt freshman Matthew Schmitt (133), junior Christian Monserrat (141), freshman Brenden McRill (184) and redshirt senior Jacob A. Notes: West Virginia has now doubled its Big 12 win total from last season, as the Mountaineers claimed the program's first-ever victory in league play over Iowa State on Feb. 12, 2017 … the Mountaineers have a 3-1 record in home matches this season, earning its third straight victory over a ranked opponent inside the WVU Coliseum on Sunday … Smith is ranked nationally in the top 10 by a trio of media outlets at 197 pounds ... the Charleston, West Virginia, native is ranked No. 5 by Intermat and FloWrestling and appears at No. 10 according to The Open Mat ... Moisey, a native of Northampton, Pennsylvania, remains at No. 19 in Intermat's latest top-20 poll at 125 pounds and checks in at No. 20 via FloWrestling … Moisey and Schmitt boast a team-best 15-6 overall mark at 125 pounds and 133 pounds, respectively … Moisey and Schmitt also are tied for a team-best four victories in dual-match play with redshirt sophomore Zachary Moore at 157 pounds … Moisey paces the Mountaineers with 19 match points on the year and sports a team-best 16 takedowns in 2017 thus far.

This Week in Rifle: The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers return to competition against Akron on Sunday, Jan. 14, with competition at the WVU Rifle Range beginning at 8 a.m. ET.

Last Week in Rifle: WVU (8-0, 5-0 GARC) has not competed since earning a 4742-4703 win against No. 3 Murray State on Nov. 12.

Notes: The Mountaineers' winning score against the Racers was an NCAA record … in the fall, the team also shot an NCAA-record 2356 smallbore and 2392 air rifle.

This Week in Swimming & Diving: West Virginia travels to TCU for a Big 12 dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 13 … The event in Fort Worth, Texas, commences at noon ET.

Last Week in Swimming & Diving: The Mountaineers did not compete last week … WVU was scheduled to host Pitt on Saturday, but the meet was postponed due to mechanical issues at the WVU Natatorium … the Backyard Brawl has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 18, at the WVU Natatorium.

Notes: Saturday's meet at TCU will be the first for WVU since Nov. 17-19 … last year against the Horned Frogs, the WVU women earned a 210-90 victory, while the men posted a 194-106 win … the triumph was the fourth in a row over TCU for the men, while it marked the first-ever Big 12 dual-meet victory for the women … the Mountaineer swimmers last competed at the Ohio State Invitational, where the men's team earned an eighth-place team finish, while the women took 11th … WVU combined for 11 top-10 finishes at the three-day meet … WVU divers competed at Rutgers University's Frank Elm Invitational on the same weekend … senior Michael Proietto earned a win on the platform to go along with a second-place finish on 3-meter and fourth on 1-meter … during the break in competition, WVU traveled to Key Largo, Florida, for its annual training trip on Dec. 14-22 … divers trained in Coral Springs, Florida, from Dec. 14-22 as well.
