MORGANTOWN. W.Va. – The No. 12/11 West Virginia University women's basketball team will host "I Belong" Day on Jan. 28 when the Mountaineers host No. 6 Baylor in a 3 p.m. game at the WVU Coliseum.
"I Belong" Day will be a celebration of diversity and inclusion in Morgantown. The event is a collaborative effort between the WVU Athletic Department, the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and WVU Student Organizations.
"I am proud of women's basketball's effort to reach out to the University and Morgantown community to sponsor 'I Belong' Day, celebrating diversity and inclusion, at the Coliseum," Director of Athletics Shane Lyons said. "Fans will get to see two great women's college basketball programs and come together on national television to support diversity and inclusion at WVU. It will be a great evening for all involved."
West Virginia and Baylor met in last season's Big 12 Tournament Championship, with the Mountaineers winning,77-66, to claim their first-ever Big 12 Tournament title. The first rematch between the two is set to be aired live nationally on FS1.
"Through athletics, we have the ability to reach a whole new audience," WVU coach Mike Carey said. "I look forward to showing the nation how the people of West Virginia come together to celebrate diversity and inclusion."
The theme of diversity and inclusion will carry throughout the game, as members of the Morgantown community will be showcased during the contest.
"The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is pleased to partner with Coach Carey and the WVU Women's Basketball team, along with our other partners throughout West Virginia University in sponsoring a diversity night," Vice President David Fryson said. "This special celebration of diversity, during a nationally televised game against one of our Big 12 rivals, will showcase to the nation how West Virginia University is a national leader in all dimensions of diversity and inclusion."
Organizations looking to be involved with I Belong Day may contact Pat Biondo at Patrick.Biondo@mail.wvu.edu. Members groups participating in the event will receive a free "I Belong" t-shirt while supplies last.
