MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team travels to University Park, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Penn State National Open from Jan. 26-27.
MEET INFO
Competition at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track is set to begin at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, with Saturday's events scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Live results will be available through FloTrack.org.
"We are off to a very familiar track venue this weekend," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "Training is continuing to progress for most of the group. Like the rest of the East Coast, we need to stay healthy and away from the flu. We have the opportunity to better ourselves, and I believe we will."
The Mountaineers are one of 25 teams competing in the two-day event, which includes No. 25 Penn State, Akron, Army West Point, Ashland, Binghamton, Bucknell, Buffalo, Coppin State, Duquesne, La Salle, Lebanon Valley, Maryland, Monmouth, Mount St. Mary's, Muhlenberg, Norfolk State, Pitt-Johnstown, Richmond, Saint Joseph's, Temple, Towson, UMBC, Vermont and Washington & Jefferson.
This weekend marks the first of two stops at Penn State for the Mountaineers during the 2017-18 indoor season. The team also will compete in the Penn State Tune-Up on Feb. 17. Additionally, the meet marks the sixth time WVU has competed in an indoor event at Penn State since the 2014-15 season.
Last year, WVU earned nine top-eight finishes at the PSU National Open, highlighted by runner-up performances in the women's triple jump and women's long jump. Then-junior Shamoya McNeil secured a mark of 12.65 meters in the triple jump, while then-sophomore Danique Bryan registered a mark of 5.91 meters in the long jump.
The Mountaineers last competed at the YSU College Invitational, on Jan. 19, in Youngstown, Ohio. WVU tallied a pair of victories at the meet, including redshirt senior Amy Cashin in the women's 800 meters (2:10.76) and redshirt senior Maggie Drazba in the women's mile (4:49.92).
Cashin's time was enough to break the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) track record in the event. For her efforts, the Werribee, Victoria, Australia, native earned Big 12 Track and Field Female Athlete of the Week honors on Jan. 24, the program's first since joining the conference in 2012.
The Mountaineers also recorded a second-place finish and two thirds in Youngstown. Freshman Ellie Gardner broke her own freshman indoor school record in the women's pole vault, earning a mark of 3.86 meters (12 feet, 8 inches) to finish in second.
The PSU National Open marks the second of six consecutive weekends in which WVU will participate in road meets to conclude the 2017-18 indoor campaign.
