
Mountaineers Sweep Big 12 Bi-Weekly Awards

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following their strong performances in back-to-back meets, the West Virginia University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept this week's Big 12 Swimmer and Diver of the Week honors, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Freshman David Dixon was named the Big 12 Men's Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Morgan Bullock earned the Big 12 Women's Swimmer of the Week. In diving, senior Michael Proietto was named the Big 12 Men's Diver of the Week, while junior Madelyn Woods was selected as the Big 12 Women's Diver of the Week.
The Mountaineers earned all four awards for the second time this season and third time in program history. Bullock was previously named the Big 12 Women's Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 19, along with redshirt senior Nate Carr (men's swimmer), senior Logan McHenry (men's diver) and junior Julia Calcut (women's diver).
"Congratulations to Maddy, Morgan, David and Michael," WVU coach Vic Riggs said. "Morgan and David are training and competing at a very high level. I'm glad to see their very solid times recognized by the Big 12."
"Mike and Maddy have been training really well," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "Mike had an outstanding meet against Pitt, and Maddy met her goal of breaking 300 (on 3-meter) at TCU. This is a nice honor for Mike, as he approaches his senior meet this weekend. Maddy continues to be consistent, and her confidence is rising. This recognition is what she needs to see that her hard work is paying off."
Dixon, Bullock, Proietto and Woods helped WVU to a sweep at TCU on Jan. 13 and a men's win over Pitt on Jan. 18.
Dixon enjoyed a dominant week, winning four times at TCU before returning home to break two WVU Natatorium records against Pitt. First, the Richmond, Virginia, native claimed victories in the 200 butterfly (1:46.59), 200 individual medley (1:50.88) and 200 breaststroke (2:04.28), while helping the 200 medley relay team to a win in a time of 1:30.66 against the Horned Frogs.
Then, the freshman's success continued in the Backyard Brawl, where he teamed with freshman Angelo Russo, redshirt junior Tristen DiSibio and junior Merwane El Merini to earn a first-place and pool-record time of 1:29.94 in the 200 medley relay. Additionally, Dixon won the 200 butterfly, registering a pool-record time of 1:45.80. He also won the 100 fly in 48.66.
In all, Dixon won seven of the eight events (individual and relay) he competed in over the last two meets.
Bullock also tallied a WVU Natatorium record in the 200 butterfly against Pitt on Jan. 18. She touched the wall in 2:00.47, earning a first-place finish in the event. The Zeeland, Michigan, native went on to win the 100 butterfly (55.67), and claimed a pair of second-place finishes in the 200 individual medley and 200 medley relay against the Panthers.
At TCU, Bullock won four total events, including three individually. She was victorious in the 100 butterfly (55.60), 200 butterfly (1:58.92), 200 individual medley (2:02.73), and she helped the 200 medley relay team to a win in 1:45.51.
On springboard, Proietto swept the 1- and 3-meter dives at TCU on Jan. 13 and added a 3-meter win against Pitt five days later. He earned a score of 361.27 on 1-meter against the Horned Frogs, while tallying a first-place score of 355.87 on 3-meter. Against Pitt, the Aston, Pennsylvania, native logged a first-place score of 356.40 on 3-meter and 302.70 on 1-meter to place second.
For Woods, the junior claimed victory on 3-meter at TCU, securing a score of 303.68 in the process. She followed that performance up with a second-place finish on 1-meter against Pitt. The Centerville, Ohio, native earned a score of 252.37 on 1-meter at the Backyard Brawl.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 27, when the men's and women's teams host Villanova. The women also will take on Big 12 foe Iowa State at the he Senior Day meet. Diving begins at 10 a.m. ET, while swimming commences at 11 a.m. at the WVU Natatorium.
