MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team checks in at No. 24 in this week's Road to Nationals Rankings.
This week's rankings are based on season average. Though the Mountaineers' average jumped to 195.233 this week, WVU (1-3) slid back six spots in the third rankings of the year.
WVU is nationally ranked on vault for the first time this season and checks in at No. 25 with a 48.833 season average. The Mountaineers also are nationally ranked No. 21 on balance beam (48.842 avg.). WVU sits at No. 28 on uneven bars (48.683 avg.) and No. 33 on floor exercise (48.875 avg.).
Individually, junior Kirah Koshinski ranks No. 27 on vault (9.85 avg.), and senior Zaakira Muhammad ranks No. 37 in the all-around (39.1 avg.).
Regionally, the Mountaineers rank No. 3 in the Southeast. WVU is ranked as high as No. 2 on beam and also ranks No. 4 on bars, No. 5 on vault and No. 6 on floor.
Six Mountaineers are regionally ranked on balance beam, with Muhammad sitting at a team-best No. 9 with a 9.813 average. Senior Jordan Gillette ranks No. 15 (9.775 avg.), and Koshinski and freshman McKenna Linnen are tied at No. 18 (9.758 avg.). Sophomore Erica Fontaine enters the rankings at No. 20 (9.75 avg.), and junior Carly Galpin follows at No. 24 (9.742 avg.).
Muhammad owns a team-best four regional rankings and ranks as high as No. 6 on bars (9.813 avg.). The Pennsauken, New Jersey, native also ranks No. 7 in the all-around and No. 11 on vault (9.813 avg.).
Koshinski ranks a team-best No. 5 on vault and No. 9 on floor (9.825 avg.).
Freshman Sydney Marler and junior Jaquie Tun are tied at No. 18 on bars (9.758 avg.), and sophomore Abby Kaufman ranks No. 13 in the all-around (38.95 avg.).
The Mountaineers continue to rank No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference. WVU also ranks No. 3 on each event but vault, where the team checks-in at No. 4.
Muhammad is the top-ranked Mountaineer in the Big 12 Conference and sits at No. 6 in the all-around rankings. She also ranks No. 9 on bars and No. 10 on beam.
Koshinski ranks No. 7 on vault and floor, and Kaufman ranks No. 8 in the all-around.
The Mountaineers closed their three-week homestand at the WVU Coliseum with a 195.4, second-place showing at the Wendy M. Roach Pink Meet Invitational on Jan. 21. George Washington scored 195.575 and finished first, while Towson placed third with a 194.4 mark.
WVU leaves Morgantown for the first time this season and travels to Davis, California, for a tri-meet with UC Davis and Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Jan. 26, with action inside The Pavilion set to begin at 10 p.m. EST.
