MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Ginny Thrasher was tops among West Virginia University student-athletes at the 2017 United States Rifle/Pistol Fall Selection Match, finishing in seventh place overall on Sept. 19.
The two-day match, held Sept. 18-19, in Fort Benning, Georgia, served as the first men's and women's 50m 3 position rifle qualification stage for the 2018 ISSF World Championships.
Thrasher, a native of Springfield, Virginia, finished in seventh place in the women's competition with a two-day total of 1166. The 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist shot 580 on Monday and 581 on Tuesday. She also shot 432.4 in the final, good enough for five additional points, pushing her total score to 1166.
Senior Elizabeth Gratz finished with a two-day total of 1144 (570, 574), while sophomore Morgan Phillips tallied 1143 (568, 575).
Junior Will Anti shot in the men's competition and finished with a two-day total of 2280 (1140, 1140).
"I think this competition was a good experience for all four of these shooters," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "They each shot better on the second day, and that's a positive for a coach, as it shows their progression. They used this competition as a training experience for the upcoming season, and I think it was nice for them to get a match under their belt before we start competition. Overall, this was a positive experience."
The quartet returned to Morgantown Tuesday evening. The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers open the 2017-18 season against No. 9 NC State on Saturday, Sept. 23, at The Citadel's Inouye Marksmanship Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
