Nine Mountaineer Swimmers Compete at U.S. Open

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University swimming and diving team sent nine representatives to compete at last week’s U.S. Open Swimming Championships at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, New York.
Competition for the event began Wednesday and continued through Sunday.
Of those that represented the Mountaineers last week, five of them were named to the All-Big 12 First Team last season.
Big 12 100-yard breaststroke gold medalist Jake Armstrong led the Mountaineers into the national event, along with teammates Morgan Bullock, Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Morgan Carr, 2016 U.S. Olympic team trial qualifier Nate Carr, Drew Damich, Tristen Di Sibio, 200-yard breaststroke school-record holder Emma Harris, Jack Portmann and Trayton Saladin.
Three Mountaineers competed in multiple individual events at the U.S. Open. Nate Carr qualified for a team-high four events, while Di Sibio and Harris were each in two events.
Below is a list of results from Mountaineer swimmers:
Wednesday (Day 1)
- Morgan Carr finished 12th overall in women's 200-meter butterfly with a lifetime-best time of 2:14.14 in ‘B’ final
- Bullock placed 33rd in women's 200-meter butterfly prelim (lifetime-best 2:17.24)
Thursday (Day 2)
- Harris placed 12th overall in women's 200-meter breaststroke after earning a school-record time of 2:30.77 in the ‘B’ final
- Di Sibio placed 22nd overall in men's 200-meter breaststroke after posting a 2:18.79 in ‘C’ final
- Saladin won his heat and placed 41st overall in men's 200-meter backstroke prelim with a lifetime-best time of 2:05.19
- Portmann finished 38th in men's 200-meter breaststroke prelim (2:21.67)
- Nate Carr finished 54th in men's 200-meter breaststroke prelim (2:23.34)
Friday (Day 3)
- Nate Carr finished 35th in men's 400 IM prelim (4:31.30)
Saturday (Day 4)
- Harris finished second in her heat after posting 1:12.94 in women's 100-meter breaststroke prelims
- Armstrong finished 37th in men's 100-meter breaststroke prelim after lifetime-best time of 1:04.30
- Di Sibio claimed 38th in men's 100-meter breaststroke prelim after posting time of 1:04.43
- Nate Carr finished 51st in men's 100-meter breaststroke prelim (1:05.29)
- Men's 4x100 medley relay team (Nate Carr, Di Sibio, Saladin, Damich) finished 10th overall after time of 3:46.62
Sunday (Day 5)
- Nate Carr finished 24th overall in men's 200 IM after earning time of 2:07.79 in 'C' final
- Damich placed 13th overall in men's 50-meter free after posting time of 23.31 in 'B' final
