Caffrey Named to Big 12 Preseason Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball’s Payton Caffrey has been named to the 2017 All-Big 12 Preseason Team, as announced by the league office on Wednesday.
“Payton did a lot of great things for us as a freshman last season,” WVU coach Reed Sunahara said. “It’s great to see her honored again. I look forward to see how she’s developed with a year under her belt. We have high expectations for her this season.”
A sophomore outside hitter, Caffrey was the 2016 AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year, earning mention on the All-Big 12 First Team, AVCA All-Midwest Region Team and Big 12 All-Freshman Team as well. In addition, she took home numerous Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors and several all-tournament team accolades.
The Chuluota, Florida, native ranked second in the Big 12 in kills per set (4.44) and points per set (4.92) and was fourth in service aces (0.26). She set a new freshman mark for total kills with 515 on the season, ranking third on WVU’s single-season kills list. Caffrey registered 12 double-doubles on the season, finishing in the NCAA’s Top-25 in both points and kills.
Senior right side Kelsie Payne of Kansas was named the Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year, while Lexi Sun of Texas was tabbed as the Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year.
West Virginia unofficially opens the season on Saturday, Aug. 19, when the Mountaineers will host their annual Gold-Blue Scrimmage at the WVU Coliseum. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
