On working at WVU …
Working at WVU is a wonderful opportunity because I get to work with a great staff and great team. I also have a lot of support from other experienced athletic trainers that help me out when needed, and I’m able to learn from them since we all come from different backgrounds. I think this opportunity has given me a great experience of working with high-level athletes as well as allowed me to gain experience working and learning from other professionals in the athletic department. Everything I have learned here will help me to be a more well rounded and experienced athletic trainer.
On being a student and a staff member …
Being both a student and a staff member has its challenges. The hardest part is coordinating my schedule with everyone else. I have classes and meetings on top of treatments and practice, so I don’t have a lot of flexibility in my schedule during the season. Especially with travel, I have to be sure I notify my professors and turn in my work early before leaving if there is anything I’m going to miss. It gets hectic if we have back to back road trips.
Comparing volleyball to other sports …
Before coming to WVU, I did not have a lot of experience working solely with a volleyball team. When I first got here and started watching practices, I was nervous every time they would dive on the floor. It's not like football where they’re in full pads or basketball where the players are hopefully not falling on the floor all the time. In volleyball, they spend a lot of time diving on the floor and going after balls to keep them in play. I thought at first I would have a lot of injuries because of that, but these girls are tough!
Daily life during the season …
During the season, I usually wake up and have class early in the morning. After I get out of class, I grab a bite to eat and head over to the Coliseum. Once I get to the Coliseum, a few of the players will come in for treatment and rehabilitation, then closer to practice time a few people come in to get taped. I have athletic training students from the undergraduate program that help me with day-to-day tasks. They help me set up coolers and water bottles out on the court as well as assist me with the athletes. During practice, I usually watch the whole time and talk with my athletic training students about questions they may have. After practice, the players will come in and check in with me and get treatment if needed. Once all the players clear out of the training room I have time to do things like pack for away trips, fill out paperwork, catch up on emails, schedule doctors appointments if needed, and clean the athletic training room. The last thing I do every day before I go home is send an email updating the coaches on any injuries and illnesses the athletes have. Once I get home, I have time for a quick dinner before doing homework.
The best part of being a Mountaineer in Morgantown …
My favorite part of being a Mountaineer is the pride. Everywhere we go, we have fans. Football and basketball game days are an absolutely unreal experience to me - it’s like the whole town shuts down for them, which shows how much our teams are loved. We also have so much support everywhere we go, even in Italy on our European tour we ran into some Mountaineers! One of my favorite things to do in Morgantown is to go to the lookout at Coopers Rock. Also, since being here I’ve been introduced to pepperoni rolls, now I’m trying to perfect my own recipe.
