MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnastics coach Jason Butts announced today that Michelle Waldron will compete at WVU next fall.
A native of Sagamore Beach, Massachusetts, Waldron was a four-year level 10 gymnast and Junior Olympics National Championships qualifier at Cape Cod Gymnastics Center.
“We're really excited to add Michelle to the 2018 class,” Butts said. “We have so many great personalities coming into Cary Gym this fall, and we feel that Michelle will unify the class and mesh well with her teammates. We expect Michelle to have an immediate impact on vault, as she shows a lot of strength on that event. Michelle has a great work ethic, and she has the potential to compete on any event.”
The 2016 Region 6 Level 10 vault champion, Waldron also finished third on balance beam, fifth in the all-around and sixth on uneven bars at the championships. She qualified for the JO National Championships that same year and placed fifth on vault, 20th on bars and 21st in the all-around. Prior to the championships, she finished second on vault, fourth on floor exercise and fifth in the all-around at the 2016 Massachusetts Level 10 Championships.
Waldron completed a successful 2016 season with four top-10 finishes at the Rhode Island Invitational, including second-place showings on vault and in the all-around. She also placed sixth on bars.
In 2015, Waldron finished fourth on vault and 10th on floor at the Region 6 Level 10 Championships. She also placed second on vault and eighth in the all-around at the state level 10 championships.
A Junior Olympics National Invitational Tournament qualifier in 2014, she placed second on vault, the same position she finished in at the Region 6 Level 10 Championships that season.
Waldron shows career-high scores of 9.7 on vault and 37.375 in the all-around.
The daughter of Peter and Deanna Waldron, she is a graduate of Sturgis Charter Public School.
Waldron completes the Mountaineers' 2018 freshman class, which included previously announced additions Jessie Bastardi, Sydney Marler and McKenna Linnen.
