Eighteen Named Academic All-Big 12

MORGANTOWN, W.Va – Eighteen members of the West Virginia University rowing team were named to the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 First Team as announced by the conference today.
Seniors Megan Brophy (criminology), Alisha Brownfield (psychology), Emily Deming (psychology), Madison James (nursing), Louisa Morgan (industrial engineering), Emma Preston (elementary education); juniors Aria Asselta (marketing), Elizabeth Hooper (marketing), Abbigail Rees (psychology), Jacqueline Spiropoulos (sociology and anthropology), Sarah Williams (exercise physiology) and sophomores Kara Ehrenberger (professional pharmacy), Amy Hoaglund (human nutrition and foods), Janae “Diamond” Hurst (biology), Carly Ledbetter (graphic design), Kaitlin Sullivan (nursing), Emma Winders (multidisciplinary studies), and Elizabeth Young (history) were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
“Our team members know that their coaches care very much about their academics, so we’re very happy to see our students recognized for their efforts,” coach Jimmy King said. “Like in sport, much of that effort occurs out of sight and is anything but fun, but it’s that day-to-day consistent effort that yields results. Congratulations to our Academic All-Big 12 Team!”
Deming and Young were two of 18 student-athletes who were recognized for having a 4.0 grade point average (GPA).
Deming also joins teammates Brownfield and Morgan in receiving first-team honors for the third consecutive year.
To earn first-team honors, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of 3.2 or better and have participated in at least 60% of the team’s scheduled competitions. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria expect percent of participation.
The Mountaineers return to the water on Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14 for the Big 12 Championship on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
