MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A boisterous crowd welcomed home the West Virginia University women’s basketball team on Tuesday at the Basketball Practice Facility, as the Mountaineers continued their celebration as the 2017 Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament Champions.
West Virginia (23-10) achieved the improbable by knocking off No. 3-seed Oklahoma (82-58) on Saturday, No. 2-seed Texas (62-59) on Saturday and toppling top-seeded and No. 2-nationally ranked Baylor (77-66) on Monday.
“It’s great to be home. Seems like we’ve been away from home for three weeks,” coach Mike Carey exclaimed after he collected his first tournament title win. “Our players were so focused. We had a lot of excitement. It was great. These young ladies deserve (the reception today). They did a great job. I told them, you don’t have these opportunities very often and they took advantage of it. They deserve everything they get.”
Tynice Martin, the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Most Outstanding Player, put on an all-star performance, along with Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team selection Teana Muldrow. Martin averaged 27.3 points in three contests, as WVU is 11-1 this season when she scores 20 or more points. Muldrow averaged 14.7 points and 8.3 rebounds in the three games.
“It’s still sinking in. When it happened, it felt so surreal,” Martin explained. “When I woke up, the trophy was still there. I haven’t been asleep yet. It’s just a good experience.”
WVU is making its 12th NCAA Tournament appearance overall and 10th under Carey. West Virginia, which returned to the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll earlier today at No. 22, will learn its postseason destination when the bracket is revealed for the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship on Monday, March 13, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
