Papineau Leading WVU at Furman

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – At one over par, freshman Etienne Papineau leads the West Virginia University golf team at the end of the first round of play on Friday at the Furman Intercollegiate at Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, South Carolina.
Papineau recorded four birdies in shooting a 73 for one over par. He is tied for 48th place.
The Mountaineers posted a team score of 297 for nine over par. They are tied for 17th place in the field. George Southern leads the way at nine under par with a 279, followed by No. 17 Clemson at eight under par with a score of 280. Wofford shot 281 to sit third at seven under.
“We didn’t play our best today and struggled on the closing stretch,” said WVU coach Sean Covich. “But there’s a lot of golf yet to be played. We need to drive the ball a little better tomorrow and give ourselves some chances. I’m looking forward to seeing our guys bounce back tomorrow.”
Max Sear and Alan Cooke are tied for 65th place, shooting two over with matching scores of 74. Sear carded a pair of birdies on the front nine, and added another on the back nine. Cooke posted a trio of birdies on the back nine.
Tristan Nicholls and Chris Williams finished the round in 90th place, as both shot four over par. Nicholls shot a 76 with a pair of birdies on the front nine, while Williams recorded a pair of birdies in the round.
The Mountaineers, along with partners Virginia Tech and Wofford, tee off starting at 9:40 a.m. Saturday for the second of three rounds. Live scoring is available for all three days via Golfstat.
