Holmes Named CT Female Athlete of the Year

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Former West Virginia University women’s basketball standout Bria Holmes was named the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Hank O’Donnell Female Athlete of the Year.
Holmes, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, became the highest Mountaineer selected in the WNBA Draft with her 11th overall pick in the first round last year. Additionally, she was the highest draft pick selection for a Connecticut native.
Holmes finished her illustrious career at WVU in 2016 with 2,001 points – the third most in program history. She became the first player at West Virginia to score 500 or more points in three consecutive seasons and ranks in WVU’s top-10 in 14 different statistical categories. She earned Senior CLASS Award Second-Team All-American honors, while picking up All-America Honorable Mention by the Associated Press and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Holmes was a three-time unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection.
As a rookie for the Dream, Holmes played in 33 games, starting 10 and averaging 7.5 points a game. She has spent the WNBA offseason playing for Bnot Maccabi Ramat Gan in the Israeli Division I women’s professional league. While in Israel, she is averaging 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Bnot Maccabi Ramat Gan leads the league with a 17-2 record.
She will be honored at the 76th Gold Key Dinner on April 30, at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington, Connecticut.
