MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The five-time reigning National Champion WVU rifle team gathered this afternoon at the WVU Coliseum to celebrate its nation-best 19th NCAA title with fans and program supporters.
The No. 1-ranked Mountaineers captured their fifth straight trophy with a championship-record 4723 score, shot at the 2017 NCAA Rifle Championships, March 10-11, at The Ohio State University’s French Field House. WVU swept the competition in both disciplines, shooting 2336 smallbore and a season-high 2387 air rifle.
A pair of freshmen won the individual NCAA titles over the weekend. Morgan Phillips took the smallbore championship on Friday, shooting a 464.3 final total. Classmate Milica Babic won the air rifle title on Saturday with a 208.1 final total. Phillips finished behind Babic in air rifle, shooting 207.2.
For her efforts all weekend, Phillips earned the NCAA Championships’ Top Performer Award.
Eleven-year coach Jon Hammond has led the WVU rifle program to six NCAA Championships since 2009.
