Mountaineers Stay at No. 2

MORGANTOWN, W.Va.–The West Virginia University rifle team ranks No. 2 in this week’s College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll.
This week’s rankings are the fifth of the year using the NCAA Team Qualifier System. In this system, an average is derived using a team’s top three scores from three different ranges.
The Mountaineers (10-0, 7-0 GARC) stay at No. 2 with an average of 4723.33, based on scores of 4725 (WVU Rifle Range), 4724 (at Akron) and 4721 (at Ohio State).
Along with WVU, the top three teams in this week’s poll hold averages above 4700.
TCU holds the No. 1 spot with an average of 4726.67, and Murray State remains at No. 3 with a 4717 average.
Air Force comes in at No. 4 with an average of 4698.67, while Alaska-Fairbanks moves up two spots to No. 5, owning a 4696 average.
Kentucky drops one spot to No. 6 with an average of 4693.67, and Ohio State is down one spot to No. 7 with a 4689 average.
Nebraska remains at No. 8 with an average of 4679.33, while NC State sits at No. 9 with a 4668.33 average.
Nevada rounds out the top 10 for the fourth week in a row with an average of 4665.
The Mountaineers return to competition this weekend for a pair of matches in Lexington, Kentucky. WVU will face Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) opponent, No. 6 Kentucky on Saturday, Feb. 11. A win against the Wildcats would be the Mountaineers’ fourth straight regular-season GARC title. On Sunday, Feb. 12, WVU will compete against No. 3 Murray State in its final regular-season match. Both matches are set to begin at 8 a.m. at the Buell Armory.
