Prior to tipoff, the Mountaineers will honor Montgomery and Rhodes. Montgomery, a native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has amassed 813 points, 889 rebounds, 312 blocks, 66 steals and 45 assists in 126 games and 101 starts in her four-year career. She is No. 2 at WVU in career blocks (311), No. 4 in offensive rebounds (309) and No. 5 in total rebounds (889).
Rhodes, a transfer from Wabash Valley College, has appeared in 45 games over the last two years. The Aurora, Illinois, native has grabbed 104 rebounds, scored 44 points, blocked 18 shots and collected 10 steals.
Montgomery graduated in May with a degree in psychology and is currently pursuing her master’s degree in communication studies. Rhodes is set to graduate in May with a degree in sociology and anthropology. Both seniors were named to the Academic All-Big 12 Team earlier this month.
“They have been great on and off the floor,” coach Mike Carey said. “They are great young ladies and have done a great job in the classroom and in the community. I’m very excited for them and the bright futures ahead of them. We wish them the best.”
West Virginia (19-10, 7-10) and Kansas (8-20, 2-15) close out the regular season on Monday. In the previous meeting on Jan. 18, KU led for three-plus minutes, but the Mountaineers stormed back in the fourth quarter for a 62-51 victory. Lanay Montgomery (15 points, 13 rebounds) and Teana Muldrow (12 points, 15 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles, while Tynice Martin tallied a team-high 21 points.
“We have to focus on Kansas,” noted Carey. “They are playing better the past few weeks. They played Kansas State very hard on Saturday, and I am sure they’ll give us a good challenge on Monday.”
Kansas has lost four consecutive games, including a 61-54 setback to rival Kansas State on Saturday. The Jawhawks’ two wins in conference play came with a 67-49 win over Oklahoma State on Feb. 8 and a 66-60 victory over Texas Tech on Jan. 28. KU has lost 17 consecutive road games in Big 12 action and is seeking its first league road win since toppling Oklahoma, 65-58, on Feb. 28, 2015.
The Jayhawks are averaging 61.8 points per game, while giving up 72.0 points per contest to opponents. Kansas is shooting 33.7 percent (613-of-1817) from the field and 30.3 percent (202-of-667) from three-point range. KU leads the league with 18.6 turnovers forced per game and a +2.9 turnover margin.
Jessica Washington leads the Jayhawks with 17.0 points and scored a game-high 24 points in the previous meeting against WVU on Jan. 18. McKenzie Calvert follows with 10.2 points per game. Chayla Cheadle leads KU with 4.9 rebounds per game.
The Mountaineers are aiming for their 11th 20-win season under Carey. Overall, the program has produced 14 20-win seasons, including three consecutive. Additionally, WVU also is aiming for its 15th home win of the season, which would be the third most in program history.
Entering the final Big 12 regular-season contest of the season, West Virginia is sixth in the league with a 7-10 record. Official pairings for the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, will be announced late Monday evening.
