Twenty-One Named to Academic All-Big 12 Team

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Twenty-one West Virginia University swimmers and divers have been named to the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Team, the Big 12 Conference announced.
Marah Bieger, Amelie Currat, Nathan Howells, James Koval, Emma Skelley and Jake Williams were six of 10 Big 12 swimmers and divers honored for a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA). West Virginia was the only team with more than three student-athletes recognized with a 4.0 GPA.
Additional WVU honorees on the Academic All-Big 12 First Team are Madeline Bolin, Mackenzie Braden, Julia Calcut, Emilie Chambers, Drew Damich, Lexi Glassmire, Chris McMahon, Maggie Miller, Adam Poe, Michael Proietto, Drew Riebel, Loren Williams and Madelyn Woods.
Sam Hall and Jake Preaskorn were named to the second team.
“Both teams did a great job in the classroom this fall, and it's nice to see them recognized,” WVU coach Vic Riggs said. “To be the only men's team and one of two women's teams to have student-athletes with a 4.0 puts our teams at the top of the conference academically, which is our goal each year.”
A total of 109 Big 12 student-athletes were recognized on the Academic All-Big 12 Teams.
The first team consists of those who have maintained a 3.20 GPA or higher, while the second team honorees hold a GPA of 3.00-3.19.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
