The Mountaineers (18-9, 6-9) and Horned Frogs (12-14, 4-11) meet for the first time since opening the Big 12 slate on Dec. 29, in Fort Worth. West Virginia collected an 83-61 win over TCU, as Tynice Martin led all scorers with 21 points. Teana Muldrow followed with 19 points and nine rebounds in the victory. WVU leads the all-time series, 11-1, and owns a 4-0 mark in Morgantown.
“They are very athletic. They are playing pretty good basketball right now,” coach Mike Carey said about TCU. “They were one possession away from beating Kansas State the other night, so they are playing pretty good. They have a lot of athletes on the perimeter. Their inside players are playing a lot better right now, so we’ll have our hands full. We know teams are jockeying for position in the Big 12 Tournament right now, so everybody is playing hard to try to move up a spot or two.”
TCU has dropped five of its last seven games, including a close 68-65 setback to Kansas State on Saturday. The Horned Frogs are averaging 71.9 points and giving up 68.6 points per game to opponents. TCU is shooting 41.9 percent (645-of-1540) from the field. The Frogs’ 37.7 three-point field goal percentage (200-of-530) is third in the Big 12 and 17th nationally. TCU is third in the league in assists per game (15.9 apg) and free throw percentage (73.1).
AJ Alix leads the Horned Frogs with 13.0 points per game, while her 41.1 percentage (62-of-151) from three-point range ranks 28th in the NCAA. Alix also leads the team with 119 assists. Jada Butts and Amy Okonkwo follow with 11.5 and 10.3 points per game, respectively. Sophomore Jordan Moore is the team’s top rebounder, pulling in 6.9 boards per game.
West Virginia is averaging 75.0 points per game and limiting opponents to 61.7 points per contest. WVU is shooting a 44.6 percent clip (736-of-1650) and 35.6 percent (185-of-520) from three-point range. The Mountaineers are aiming for their 14th win at home this season, which would be tied for the third-most home wins in program history.
Individually, Martin continues to pace the Mountaineers with 17.5 points per game. Muldrow follows with 14.2 points per contest and is five away from becoming the 33rd Mountaineer in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Lanay Montgomery leads WVU with 11.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. The senior has recorded double-doubles in the last two games and has 19 in her career, which is the most for a Mountaineer since Maria Tchobanova in 1999. Montgomery needs 11 more rebounds to move into fourth all-time on WVU’s career ledger.
The Mountaineers hold a 56 RPI with three regular-season games remaining. Following Wednesday’s contest, WVU concludes its road portion of the schedule with a 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT contest at Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb. 25.
