Mountaineers Enter Postseason Ranked No. 2
February 14, 2017 03:25 PM | Rifle
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University rifle team enters the postseason ranked No. 2 nationally, as the Mountaineers did not move in this week’s College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) Poll.
This week’s rankings are the last of the year; a postseason ranking will be released following the NCAA Rifle Championships on March 10-11. Teams are ranked according to the NCAA Qualifying System, which is based on an average of a squad’s top three scores shot at three different venues.
Though the Mountaineers (12-0, 8-0 GARC) boosted their average to 4725, they did not move from the spot they have retained since Jan. 4. WVU’s average is based on scores of 4726 (at Kentucky), 4725 (at WVU Rifle Range) and 4724 (at Akron).
TCU continues to rank No. 1 with an average of 4726.67. Murray State follows the Mountaineers at No. 3 (4717), while Air Force ranks No. 4 (4698.67) and Alaska-Fairbanks sits at No. 5 (4696).
Kentucky ranks No. 6 (4693.67), Ohio State ranks No. 7 (4689) and Nebraska ranks No. 8 (4679.33). NC State (4668.33) and Nevada (4665) round out the top 10.
The Mountaineers will shoot an NCAA Qualifying Match on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8 a.m., at the WVU Rifle Range. UAF will shoot alongside WVU, but the teams will not compete in a shoulder-to-shoulder match. Saturday is WVU’s final home match of the season and will serve as Senior Day for Jean-Pierre Lucas. Fans are encouraged to stop by the Range throughout the day.
