West Virginia and K-State Square Off Wednesday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s basketball team concludes the regular-season series with No. 24th-ranked Kansas State on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in a 7 p.m. tilt at the WVU Coliseum.
Wednesday’s contest will be televised on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh with Robby Incmikoski and Meg Bulger on the broadcast.

Wednesday’s contest is Local Heroes Night and is the first of three pint glass giveaways. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a “Roll out the Carpet” pint glass. Additionally, all fans who donate a nonperishable food item at the Gold Gate will receive free admission. The donated items will benefit The Rack: WVU’s Food Bank for Students. Fans can purchase tickets online at WVUGAME.com or by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office at 1-800-WVU GAME.
West Virginia (17-8, 5-8) and Kansas State (18-7, 8-5) previously met on Jan. 1 with the Wildcats taking the 86-71 victory in Manhattan. Chania Ray led the Mountaineers with a career-high 23 points, while K-State’s Breana Lewis scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Currently, the Wildcats are fourth in the Big 12 with an 8-5 mark and the Mountaineers are fifth with a 5-8 league record. Kansas State has won three of its last four contests, including an 80-68 win over Iowa State on Saturday in Manhattan.
“I want us to attack their zone a lot better,” coach Mike Carey said. “We need to have better ball movement and go inside out. Defensively, they beat us on a lot of backdoors and a lot of touches in the paint. We need to keep their guards out of the paint and limit them to one shot. We need to try to get a running game going before they set up in a zone. I think we are getting a little swagger back. I think we are gaining some more confidence. We are shooting the ball better and moving the ball better. We’re rebounding the ball better. If we can do those things tomorrow night, we should be right there.”
The Wildcats are averaging 68.2 points and giving up 60.8 points per game to opponents. K-State is shooting 42.9 percent (611-of-1425) from the field and limiting opponents to 37.1 percent (558-of-1504). K-State is second in the league and 28th nationally with fewest fouls per game (14.6).
Kindred Wesemann and Lewis are each averaging 14.0 points per game. Lewis, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, leads the Wildcats with 8.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Wesemann leads the Big 12 with 68 three-pointers, which ranks 37th nationally. Karyla Middlebrook is nearly averaging double-figures with 9.1 ppg.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 79-53 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday, where WVU made a school-record 17 three-pointers. Tynice Martin led the way with 30 points, eight rebounds and a personal-best seven three-pointers. Teana Muldrow registered her second consecutive double-double and sixth of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Martin was tabbed the Big 12 Player of the Week after averaging 32.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game last week. She scored a career-high 35 points in a double-overtime loss at No. 19/20 Oklahoma on Feb. 7. Martin is second in the league with 18.1 points per game.
Muldrow is second on the team with 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. The East Orange, New Jersey, native is 26 points away from becoming the 33rd Mountaineer to reach the 1,000-point milestone. Lanay Montgomery is averaging 11.5 points and a team-best 9.3 rebounds per game. The senior center leads the Big 12 Conference with her 68.2 field goal percentage (122-of-179). Ray continues to lead the conference with 5.7 assists per game, while Alexis Brewer paces the league with a 46.6 three-point field goal percentage (27-of-58).
West Virginia is averaging 76.2 points and giving up just 61.6 points per contest. The Mountaineers are 17-0 this season when shooting higher than their opponent and 17-1 when winning the rebound battle. WVU is seeking its second top 25 win of the season. A victory would mark the eighth consecutive year that WVU has knocked off at least two or more ranked opponents in a season.
Following Wednesday’s contest, WVU hits the road for a 1 p.m. ET/noon CT matchup at Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 18.
