MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University women’s basketball sophomore guard Tynice Martin was named the Big 12 Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.
The Atlanta native averaged 32.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game, as WVU went 1-1 last week with a 90-87 double-overtime loss at No. 19/20 Oklahoma and a 79-53 win over Oklahoma State.
In West Virginia’s heartbreaking loss to the Sooners, Martin tallied a career-high 35 points and grabbed five rebounds. She made 14-of-24 from the field (58.3%) and 6-of-8 (75.0%) from behind the arc. Martin’s 35 points were the second-most in a game by a West Virginia sophomore, only one point behind Meg Bugler’s 36-point performance in 2005.
Martin followed up with another stellar game against the Cowgirls, scoring a game-high 30 points. The sophomore grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists. Martin was on fire from the perimeter, knocking down 7-of-10 (70%) from three-point range and 11-of-22 (50.0%) from the field.
She became the first Mountaineer since Bulger in 2005 to score 30 or more points in back-to-back games. Martin ranks second in the Big 12 with 18.1 points per game and is third in the league with 2.0 steals per contest.
The Big 12 Player of the Week is the first for Martin in her career and the second for a Mountaineer this season. Chania Ray garnered Big 12 weekly honors on Jan. 2. Martin was a two-time Big 12 Freshman of the Week honoree last season.
West Virginia resumes action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in a 7 p.m. contest against No. 24-ranked Kansas State. The game will be televised on ROOT SPORTS Pittsburgh. Wednesday’s contest is Local Heroes Night and is the first of three pint glass giveaways. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a “Roll out the Carpet” pint glass. Additionally, all fans who donate a nonperishable food item at the Gold Gate will receive free admission. The donated items will benefit The Rack: WVU’s Food Bank for Students. Fans can purchase tickets online at WVUGAME.com or by calling the Mountaineer Ticket Office at 1-800-WVU GAME.
