
Moore Named Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Following a week in which he helped the Mountaineers defeat No. 25 Pitt for the first time since 2015, West Virginia University redshirt sophomore Zachary Moore has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Moore earned a 3-1 decision over Taleb Rahmani, who is ranked as high as No. 17 via FloWrestling, at 157 pounds in the Mountaineers' 24-10 win over the Panthers on Saturday. The two remained scoreless through the first period until Rahmani notched an escape to begin the second. Moore then used an escape early in the third period to even the match at 1-1. With the match tied heading into sudden victory, coach Sammie Henson challenged that Moore should have been awarded a takedown at the end of the regulation. The ruling on the mat was reversed in favor of West Virginia, giving Moore the 3-1 victory over Rahmani.
Of note, Moore faced Rahmani for the second time in as many weeks. He avenged a loss to Rahmani at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 1. Rahmani finished on the podium at the event, placing seventh in his pool of 157.
This Week in Women's Basketball: The No. 10/11 WVU women's basketball team travels to Charleston, West Virginia, on Saturday to host Radford at the Charleston Civic Center … tipoff is set for 4 p.m.
Last Week in Women's Basketball: The Mountaineers picked up a pair of victories at the WVU Coliseum … WVU downed rival Pitt, 73-52, on Thursday behind senior forward Teana Muldrow's fourth double-double of the season (20 pts, 10 rebs) … junior guard Katrina Pardee also made a career-best five 3-pointers in the win … on Sunday, the Mountaineers rolled past Coppin State, 101-43 … Pardee bested her 3-point mark with six on the day and went off for a career-high 25 points … redshirt freshman Krsytaline McCune also had a career-high 12 points in the game.
Notes: The Mountaineers improved to 27-19 against the Panthers … WVU has now won four straight games in the Backyard Brawl … the Mountaineers' 21-point margin of victory marked their largest since defeating the Panthers, 56-35, on Feb. 13, 2008, at the WVU Coliseum … WVU led the contest for 39:49, the longest it has led a game all season … with the win over Coppin State, the Mountaineers have won 37 consecutive nonconference games inside the WVU Coliseum dating back to Nov. 24, 2013 … WVU improves to a perfect 10-0 all-time record against Coppin State and 18-1 against the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference … WVU scored on nine of their first ten possessions to start the game … with her 22-point performance, Teana Muldrow has now registered five consecutive 20-point games … she is the first to do so since Rosemary Kosiorek in 1992 … Muldrow has now made eight straight free throws … Katrina Pardee drained six 3-pointers, breaking her career-high of five set Thursday against Pitt … Pardee recorded a new career high of 25 points, breaking her career high of 20 points set against North Florida on Nov. 19 … WVU's 102 points became the 22nd time it has reached triple figures in a game … WVU dished out a season-high 27 assists as a team, the most since recording 32 against Longwood on Dec.17, 2016.
Coach Mike Carey following Sunday's win Coppin State: "We formed a lot of bad habits instead of good habits. I hate these type of games, but we did what we had to do to get the win. It's good, we're in final exams now and all that. I can give them off a couple of days, and then get started back Wednesday, and then play in Charleston Saturday. We'll get back to action on Wednesday."

Last Week in Volleyball: West Virginia dropped a three-set match to Ole Miss in a National Volleyball Invitational Championship (NIVC) Semifinal matchup on Saturday at the Gillom Athletics Performance Center in Oxford, Mississippi … the Mountaineers fell in set scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-17 to conclude their 2017 season … sophomore outside hitter Payton Caffrey led the Mountaineers for the fifth straight match with 13 kills, hitting .300 on the day … senior middle blocker Mia Swanegan was not far behind Caffrey, hitting a team-best .318 with 11 kills on 22 swings … Swanegan also notched five block assists and three solo blocks, totaling eight blocks in the match … senior libero Gianna Gotterba had a season-best 23 digs … Caffrey added nine digs to the team's total of 46, while senior setter Emma Anderson assisted on 31 of the team's 39 kills … West Virginia finished the match hitting .157 with 39 kills and nine team blocks … prior to the match at Ole Miss, WVU notched a commanding 3-0 win over former BIG EAST foe Syracuse on Monday, Dec. 4 … WVU took the victory in set scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 25-18 to earn its 11th sweep of the season, advancing to the NIVC Semifinals ... Caffrey led the Mountaineers once again, hitting .250 with 19 kills ... West Virginia finished the match hitting .205 with 49 kills on 132 swings and four team blocks.
Notes: WVU concludes its season with a 21-13 overall record … the Mountaineers exceeded a predicted sixth-place finish in the Big 12 with a 6-10 fifth-place mark in the league, upsetting then-No. 14 Kansas for the first time in program history to cap regular-season play … WVU won 21 games for the first time since a 26-11 campaign in 1991, the only time before 2017 that the Mountaineers made the postseason … with 21 wins this year, third-year coach Reed Sunahara has earned his highest win total as head coach of the Mountaineers … Saturday's contest marked the final career match for five Mountaineer seniors: Gotterba, Anderson, Swanegan, Taylor Cross and Morgan Montgomery … Caffrey was awarded a spot on the All-Midwest Regional Honorable Mention Team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Dec. 5, ending her sophomore campaign with her name in many of WVU's sophomore and single-season records.
