MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University track and field team kicks off the 2017-18 indoor season with the Marty Pushkin Track Classic on Saturday, Dec. 2 at the WVU Shell Building.
Field events are set to begin at 9 a.m. ET, while running events get started at 10 a.m. The Mountaineers welcome 11 teams in for the season-opening meet, including Alderson Broaddus, Bethany, Charleston, Frostburg State, Salem International, Thiel, Washington & Jefferson, Waynesburg, Westminster (Pa.), Wheeling Jesuit and the WVU Track Club. Admission is free for all fans.
"This is an exciting time for track and field," WVU coach Sean Cleary said. "The track-specific athletes have been training hard since August and have the opportunity to finally compete. We have a large number of schools attending the meet, so the Shell should be packed, providing a great atmosphere. We are anxious to see how fall training equates to actual performance."
Saturday's field events include the weight throw, shot put, pole vault, long jump, triple jump and high jump. Running events include the 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles, 200-meter dash, 400 meters, 500 meters, 800 meters, 1-mile run, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters and 4x400-meter relay.
WVU claimed three victories at the Pushkin Classic last season. Junior Faith Penny won the women's high jump, while senior Shamoya McNeil claimed the women's triple jump. The Mountaineers also won the women's 4x400-meter relay at last year's event.
Saturday marks the first of two home meets for WVU this season. The Mountaineers also will host the WVU Open on Jan. 13.
During the 2016-17 indoor track season, WVU finished 10th at the Big 12 Championship, while eight Mountaineers earned All-Big 12 honors.
This year, eight newcomers are set to join the program, while 21 others return for the 2017-18 campaign.
