MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University forward Teana Muldrow has been named a candidate for the inaugural Cheryl Miller Award, presented to the top small forward in women's basketball, as announced by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
One of 20 on the watch list, Muldrow is joined by Big 12 foes Bridget Carleton (Iowa State), Maddie Manning (Oklahoma) and Ariel Atkins (Texas).
The senior forward helped the Mountaineers to their first-ever Big 12 Tournament Championship last season, averaging 14.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game in the tournament to earn Big 12 Championship All-Tournament Team honors. Muldrow netted 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the finals, helping WVU upset No. 2 Baylor.
Muldrow finished the 2016-17 season averaging 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, shooting 48.2 percent from the field and 37.2 percent from three-point range. Her numbers put her at third in the Big 12 in rebounds per game (8.5 rpg), third in defensive rebounds per game (5.9 drpg), seventh in points per game (14.5 ppg), eighth in offensive rebounds (2.6 orpg), 10th in steals per game (1.3 spg), 11th in free throw percentage (78.2%), 12th in field goal percentage (48.2%), 15th in blocked shots per game (1.1 bpg) and 15th in minutes played per game (29.7 mpg). Muldrow became the 33rd player in program history to reach 1,000 points following a 25-point performance against TCU last February.
The Selection Committee for the Cheryl Miller Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2018 Cheryl Miller Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Miller and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans will also have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist at www.hoophallawards.com.
The winner of the 2018 Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award will be announced during ESPN2's telecast of the national semifinal games in the 2018 NCAA Women's Final Four in Columbus, Ohio on Friday, March 30. Additional awards being presented include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award, as well as the Wade Trophy, the sport's oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award.
