MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – All but two members of the top-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will compete at the USA Shooting Winter Airgun (WAG) Championships this weekend, Dec. 1-2, at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The two-day event will serve as part one of two in the selection process for upcoming ISSF World Cups, Championship of the Americas and the ISSF World Championship. Part two will take place in the spring.
"This is a great fall season finale for our athletes. The match is especially important being that it is part one of the United States' World Championships trials," Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond said. "This weekend is a tough competition against the best athletes in the United States, and that alone makes this a great experience for all."
Seven Mountaineers will shoot at this weekend's championships: senior Elizabeth Gratz, juniors Will Anti and Ginny Thrasher, sophomores Milica Babic and Morgan Phillips, redshirt-freshman Noah Barker and freshman Sarah Osborn.
The competitors will shoot one relay each day of competition. The top-eight shooters will have the opportunity to advance to a final in the overall and junior competitions over the three days.
To be eligible to compete in the junior event, participants must be younger than 21 and a citizen of the United States.
