MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team will travel to Norman, Oklahoma, for a league match against the Sooners on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. ET.
Live stats will be available through StatBroadcast. A live video link will be posted on WVUsports.com when it becomes available.
"Oklahoma is good," said WVU coach Reed Sunahara. "They went five sets at Kansas, and they played Texas tough. They are a handful at home. They have a great thing going there. They are playing well right now, and we need to up our game. Hopefully, we can do that within the next couple days and be ready on Saturday."
The Mountaineers (15-9, 3-7) and the Sooners (5-18, 2-8) will meet for the 13th time overall on Saturday and the 12th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. OU owns an 11-1 lead in the all-time series, though WVU picked up it's first-ever win in its most recent meeting on Oct. 13, defeating the Sooners in four sets on Alumni Weekend in Morgantown.
Four Mountaineers finished the night hitting .300 or better, with the team hitting .213 on the evening. Sophomore outside hitter Payton Caffrey paved the way for WVU with 19 kills (.343), followed by sophomore ride side hitter Natania Levak with nine. Senior middle blocker Mia Swanegan also hit a team high .375, recording eight kills in the win. Sophomore setter Erin Slinde assisted on 39 kills, while senior libero Gianna Gotterba had a team-high 11 digs. Freshman middle blocker Katie DeMeo also recorded eight block attacks for the Mountaineers, while Swanegan and Levak posted six apiece. As a team, West Virginia had 49 kills and just 23 errors on 122 total swings with 15 team blocks.
Of note, the Mountaineers will travel to Norman for the first time in two years. Oklahoma was unable to travel to West Virginia in 2015, forcing WVU to play consecutive matches at OU. Oklahoma then returned the favor last season, as the Mountaineers played host to the Sooners in back-to-back contests. With Saturday's match, the traditional home-and-away series is back on track.
West Virginia has not won a match on the road in Big 12 play this season. The Mountaineers last road win was to Providence, 3-1, at the Black Knights Invitational held in West Point, New York. WVU has never swept OU in the home-and-away series, as the Mountaineers continue to search for their first-ever victory in Norman on Saturday.
In its most recent contest, West Virginia capped its nonconference schedule with a 3-0 sweep over Robert Morris on Oct. 31 at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. The Mountaineers rolled to the victory in set scores of 25-10, 25-23 and 25-15. West Virginia finished with a 12-2 mark in nonconference play this season and is now 27-14 all-time in non-league matches under Sunahara.
WVU currently sits in fifth place in the Big 12 standings. Caffrey continues to lead the Big 12 with 0.45 service aces per set and ranks inside the top 10 in points (sixth) and kills (eighth). Slinde sits inside the top five in service aces (fifth) and assists (fifth), averaging 0.27 service aces and 9.86 assists per set. Swanegan also ranks fifth in the league with 1.13 blocks per set.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will return to the WVU Coliseum for a three-match homestand starting with No. 19 Iowa State on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Wednesday's contest is Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night, as all members are admitted free with a valid I.D.
