MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Michael Proietto won platform to cap a strong weekend for the West Virginia University diving team at the Frank Elm Invitational in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Sunday.
Proietto won the event with a 309.80, besting junior teammate Austin Smith, who placed second with a 279.60.
At the three-day meet, Proietto finished in the top four on all three events, placing second on 3-meter on Friday and finishing fourth on 1-meter on Saturday.
"It's always nice to end on a positive note," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "Today's tower day was very successful. I could not be happier for Mike and Austin. Their hard work and commitment to training was evident in their performance today. Since we don't have a tower for training, we use our resources and do all of our tower training in the gymnastics gym.
"Our women also stepped up and did a great job today. With it being our first tower meet on the season, it's always a little nerve-racking, but they handled it well and continued the trend of consistency."
Proietto and Smith were two of just three divers to finish with scores of 270 or higher in Sunday's platform event.
For the women, junior Madelyn Woods led West Virginia with a seventh-place finish thanks to a score of 177.90. Fellow junior Averly Hobbs was just behind her in eighth place with a 177.65. Freshman Callie Smith earned a 174.90 to place ninth for WVU's third top-10 finish in the event.
The WVU swimming and diving team returns to competition on Jan. 6, when it hosts Pitt in the Backyard Brawl. Competition at the WVU Natatorium will commence at 10 a.m. ET.
