"It's always a great day to highlight their careers, and we are thankful that Gianna and Morgan stayed with us. It turned into a great senior class with the addition of Taylor, Mia and Emma as well," said third-year coach
Reed Sunahara. "It's a bittersweet day. It's sad to see them leave, but it's not over yet. We still have a lot of volleyball left to play."
West Virginia (16-11, 4-9) and Baylor (21-5, 11-2) meet for the 15th time since 1986, with the Lady Bears boasting an 11-3 all-time advantage in the series. Sunday's contest marks the second meeting of the season between the two squads, as Baylor picked up a 3-0 sweep over the Mountaineers on Oct. 7, at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas.
However, WVU notched three straight wins from 2013-14, including a season sweep in 2014. The last time the Mountaineers picked up a win over the Lady Bears was on Nov. 22, 2014, earning a 3-0 victory inside the WVU Coliseum.
Sunday's match against Baylor marks the eighth time this season the Mountaineers have played a team ranked inside the AVCA Top-25 Poll. Baylor was receiving votes in the AVCA poll for six straight weeks prior to the squads' Oct. 7 matchup in Waco.
West Virginia has not competed since its five-set win over Big 12 foe Texas Tech on Nov. 11. The Mountaineers rallied to earn the win in set scores of 18-25, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17 and 15-11. Behind 25 kills from sophomore outside hitter
Payton Caffrey, the Mountaineers hit .231 with 58 kills on 147 total swings. Senior middle blocker
Mia Swanegan also had 10 blocks, as the Mountaineers posted 16.0 team blocks in the win.
"I want us to compete hard and apply the things that we have been working on in practice all week," Sunahara said. "I think we had a couple good days of practice, and we have to put that to use. We needed some time off. We needed to recover. It was a good win vs. Texas Tech on Saturday, but we have to put that to use and build on that momentum."
West Virginia is currently tied for fifth place in the Big 12 standings with Oklahoma.
Through 27 matches, Caffrey leads the Mountaineers in kills with 327, sophomore setter
Erin Slinde leads in assists with 889, freshman defensive specialist
Alexa Hasting leads in digs with 278, and Swanegan leads in blocking at 120.0. Caffrey also leads the squad with 41 service aces on the year. As a team, West Virginia is hitting .217 and holding its opponents to a .183 clip, while out blocking its opponents, 227.0-217.0.
Up next, the Mountaineers will swing through Kansas for a pair of Big 12 matches to close the regular season. West Virginia takes on Kansas State on Wednesday, Nov. 22, followed by a match at No. 16 Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 25.
"We have three tough matches left," Sunahara said. "Two on the road and one at home, all against good teams. We will see what happens."
