MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior diver Michael Proietto led the way for the West Virginia University diving team on the second day of the Frank Elm Invitational in Piscataway, New Jersey, on Saturday.
Proietto finished fourth overall in the men's 1-meter, earning a score of 342.20 in the A Final. The Aston, Pennsylvania, native was one of six Mountaineers to qualify for Saturday's event finals, along with juniors Austin Smith, Madelyn Woods and Averly Hobbs and freshmen Caleb Keck and Callie Smith.
"Today was a good day for the divers," WVU diving coach Michael Grapner said. "Mike, Austin and Caleb were all very solid. Caleb is doing a great job applying his corrections and making positive changes. Mike and Austin stepped it up tonight in the finals; it was a very competitive final. I'm very pleased for them."
Smith joined Proietto in the 1-meter A Final, finishing seventh with a score of 280.85. Keck competed in the B Final for WVU, earning a score of 232.55 and a 16th-place overall finish.
Proietto and Smith opened the three-day competition at the Rutgers University Aquatics Center with respective second- and third-place finishes on 3-meter on Friday.
For the women, Woods, Hobbs and Smith all qualified for the 3-meter B Final. Woods paced West Virginia with a score of 268.50, good for second in the consolation and 10th overall. Hobbs placed third in the B Final (11th overall) with a score of 265.05, while Smith earned a 15th-place overall finish with a score of 328.40.
"The women really had a tough contest with 53 divers in the event," Grapner said. "Having three girls for the consolation finals was outstanding. Once they qualified, it was like the nerves went away, and they really came to dive. Yesterday, the key word was consistency, and that was the focus for today. I'm excited for the girls and their progress to this point in the season."
The Mountaineers will compete in the conclusion of the Frank Elm Invitational on Sunday, as both the men and women are scheduled to perform platform dives. The session is set to begin at 2 p.m. ET.
"They were all very consistent again today, and they now know what to expect for Zones," Grapner added. "I'll be excited to come back in March with a full and healthy squad of divers."
